SUMMARY:Quick Sketching on the Farm and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:What is Quick Sketching? It’s a chance to let go of perfection and capture the feeling of a place with quick\, expressive sketches. In this fun and welcoming workshop\, local artist and teacher Linda Robertson will lead us in a loose drawing approach that’s all about observation\, memory\, and emotion—not technical accuracy. Linda’s signature 90-second sketch technique is a playful and powerful way to begin drawing quickly\, confidently\, and without overthinking. This practice is a fantastic way to begin drawing without pressure\, no matter your experience level!  Linda will share stories and pages from her own sketchbooks\, created during travels in Ireland\, France\, Hawaii\, and beyond.  Using the scenic backdrop of Plas Newydd Farm\, you’ll see how these quick impressions can become meaningful visual diaries of your own adventures—whether abroad\, in your own backyard\, or here on the farm.  This workshop is open to all levels. You don’t need to “know how to draw.” You just need curiosity\, a sense of play\, and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you. We will be taking a few short walks on the farm\, so come prepared to be out in the November weather!  All supplies for this workshop will be provided for you\, but feel free to bring your favorite sketchbook and watercolor set. Don’t worry if you haven’t tried anything like this before. We’ll just relax and have some fun! Please bring a lunch\, and clothes and shoes to be outside whatever the weather! We will provide coffee\, tea\, water\, and light snacks. While we make every effort to be an accessible space\, there are some limitations due to the realities of our historical space. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and has taught art workshops for the last 20 years. Linda has been featured speaker and instructor at numerous art conferences throughout the US\, and her work has been published in books and periodicals including American Art Collector\, Authentic Visual Voices\, and Professional Artist Magazine.  Linda has been a featured presenter and instructor at the International Encaustic Artists (IEA) retreat in Ireland\, and leads her own 8-day art retreats in Ireland annually. DESCRIPTION:BirdFest & Bluegrass Partnership Event!In this partnership between The Ridgefield Art Association and The Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge\, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided walk of the refuge with paintbrush in hand!Join local artist Kathleen Sorman to learn new ways to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the RNWR through nature journaling. We’ll begin our time together with a short walk on the Oaks to Wetland Trail. We’ll make new discoveries along the way and see how we can use these in our journals to record our findings. Then we’ll return to the Refuge Headquarters building and use our journals to learn to paint a bird with watercolors. Great class for kids 10 years or above and all adults. From Kathleen: I have always been a nature lover—camping\, hiking\, biking and sailing. I moved to the beautiful PNW fifteen years ago and call this home. I love the natural beauty we are able to see each and every day. I have been journaling for 8-10 years and enjoy getting out and focusing on different things each session—birds\, trees\, plants and flowers. My art journey began about 7 years ago with watercolor and botanical art. Currently\, I’m exploring acrylics and abstract art. SUMMARY:Plein Air at the Forest Edge
DESCRIPTION:2-day Plein Air workshop on the farm with Jef Gunn. Plein Air painting is simply painting in the open air. That’s what we’ll do. Painting itself can be tricky\, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition\, simplification\, color\, palette layout (and management!) \, gumption\, place\, light and shadow\, mystery. This will be quite the adventure in painting in the out of doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. A farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers\, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color\, composition\, palette management\, and keeping your cool while managing all that!It’s going to be a great weekend out on the land. Jef is an experienced teacher with a wealth of knowledge to offer and we’re so excited to welcome him to the farm for his first Ridgefield workshop. We will provide coffee\, tea\, water and snacks. Participants should bring water bottle\, lunch\, clothes for the weather\, and the materials listed below.If you have any difficulty acquiring materials\, please get in touch and we will see how we can help! He began working in encaustic in 1985\, integrating materials such as paper\, ink\, tar\, fabric\, and gold leaf to explore layered meanings influenced by Asian art. His work has been exhibited nationally\, including solo and group shows at Oregon State University\, Marylhurst University\, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. In 2006\, he co-curated the national encaustic show Impulse. Jef has taught painting and drawing in Seattle and Portland since the mid-1990s\, and his work is represented by galleries in Seattle\, Edison\, Honolulu\, and Portland. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge\, and helpful insight\, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint.

DESCRIPTION:2025 Spring ShowWe are thrilled to announce our first fine arts show\, created in collaboration with Ridgefield artist Ann Fleming. DESCRIPTION:Linoleum Block Printing: A Two-Day Workshop Experience with Brian Tibbetts The number one wish from the folks who attended Brian’s first workshop back in 2023 was that they had another day to refine their skills\, so that’s what we are offering up for this spring. We hope you’ll join us!Block printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier\, and easy way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition of printmaking\, spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. From the Japanese woodcut moku hanga prints\, depicting the “Floating World” or Ukiyo-e; to the 2000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich history of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance\, printmaking continues to be a way to make art accessible to the masses both in terms of owning the finished product and in terms of making the art itself. In this comprehensive two-day workshop\, designed to suit both beginners and those with some experience\, you’ll dive deep into the art of block printing through hands-on learning and exploration of both single-color and multi-color techniques. Day One: Foundations of Block Printing Introduction to block printing materials and toolsUnderstanding different carving materials and their propertiesBasic image carving techniques using easy-cut materialsAdvanced carving techniques for linoleum blocksPaper preparation and ink selectionPrinting techniques for creating clean\, consistent editionsRegistration methods for precise printingCreating and printing a numbered edition of your first block printDay Two: Multi-Color Techniques and Advanced Methods Introduction to multi-color block printing approachesColor theory and ink mixing for printmakingRegistration systems for multiple colorsReduction printing techniquesMultiple block printing methodsColor overlay effects and transparencyAlternative inking techniques including gradients and selective inkingCreation of a multi-color print using your choice of techniqueThroughout both days\, participants will receive individual guidance and feedback while working at their own pace. Please be sure to choose the appropriate one so we can have your materials ready for you!  If you are a beginner with no tools\, your ticket will include an $85  fee for everything you need for the weekend. If you are coming equipped with your own tools\, the fee is $45 for linoleum blocks\, ink\, and paper. Space is limited to ensure individual attention. All skill levels welcome. Participants must be 16 or older due to sharp tool usage. Your Instructor: Brian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has been a part of group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. He began working primarily in block printing in the 2010s and is a member of Print Arts Northwest\, and was a PAN Emerging Printmaking Resident in 2023/24. He is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose. He works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.  Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. SUMMARY:Gelli Plate Landscape Collage
DESCRIPTION:We’re so excited to welcome the multi-talented Ann Fleming back to the farm for a full-day gelli plate workshop. Her mini-workshop at the Open House was standing room only\, so she’s coming back for a full day of exploration and creativity!Gelli plates are a wonderful tool. They can be used for mono-printing and for creating unique\, spontaneous\, and original collage papers. In this workshop we will focus on the creation of collage papers. Once we have lots of papers completed we will create abstracted landscapes influenced by the beautiful surroundings of PN Farm. Along the way Ann will teach you how to look for value shapes using a Notan application.Each participant will have the chance to complete at least one piece of original artwork\, along with starting their own collection of collage papers for future art works. A $10 material fee is included in the price of this ticket. There will be snacks\, tea\, coffee and water available throughout the day; please plan on bringing a lunch (microwave\, stovetop\, fridge and toaster available for your use). Bring some outdoor gear for possible short stroll\, and come prepared to get messy!Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. While we strive to make our workshops accessible to all\, we are located in a historical home that does not have accessible restrooms at this point; our lowest entrance has two steps to enter. Reach out to arts@pnfarm.com to request financial aid for this workshop!About the instructor: After a successful 25 year career as a potter creating architectural elements and brightly painted functional ware\, Ann began to focus on sculpture.  Her bronze figurative sculptures have been shown extensively across the Western US\, with over 350 pieces in private and public collections. In 2016 Ann turned her focus to painting and mixed media.  Using acrylics and the addition of handmade collage papers\, Ann describes her process…“I want the surface of the painting to draw you in as much as the subject or the story.”  Her work is figurative in nature\, focusing on the female form. With a Masters degree in art and teaching\, Ann taught art at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts\, Multnomah Art Center\, Lewis and Clark College and has taught several workshops.  Ann has also been active in arts organizing\, contributing to the founding of art festivals and co-operative galleries and doing board work for multiple art organizations.

DESCRIPTION:New Date!!Join us  on January 25th and 26th for the first annual PN Farm Arts Festival of Pen & Ink. It’s going to be a little bit of sculpture\, a little bit of alchemy\, a little bit of geekery and a whole lot of magic—and we can’t wait to have you join us!This two-day workshop will be limited to 8 participants\, so sign up early to ensure your spot!Dreamed up over the wood lathe with sculptor Lila Ferber last February\, the Festival of Pen and Ink is for anyone who wants to get their hands in on the crafting of writing and drawing tools. In addition to Lila with her 4 traveling wood lathes\, we will be welcoming Molly Holmlund of Foraged Ink (she’s amazing\, trust me! I drove over to White Salmon last spring to take a workshop with her\, and it was lovely)\, and an as-yet unnamed but super cool book artist. Participants  will work in cohorts of four (don’t worry\, we’ll mix up our groups) and will leave the weekend with: 2  pens hand-crafted on the wood lathe\, made from fallen oak and elm harvested here on Plas Newydd FarmInk made from materials gathered on the farmA hand-bound journalA collection of short writings or quick sketches generated from prompts offered throughout the weekend. If you need a scholarship for this workshop\, please get in touch by email and we will do our best to accommodate you!Speaking of accommodations\, we have limited housing available on a first come\, first served basis. SUMMARY:One-Backpack Plein Air – Pack Light and Paint Bold!
DESCRIPTION:We’re so delighted to welcome Portland-based painter and teacher Scott Gellatly back to the farm for another two-day dive into plein air painting! This workshop is likely to fill up\, so register early to guaranty your spot!This two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts while capturing the light\, atmosphere\, and emotion of the landscape in a bold\, responsive manner. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and demonstrations.We plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! Scott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. MATERIALS LIST This workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. Color Palette: Titanium WhiteCadmium Yellow LightIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)Cadmium OrangeQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)Ultramarine BlueCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)Painting Panels: Ampersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. 7 – 8 @ panels\, sizes 6” x 8” or 8” x 10”. Wet-panel Carrier: These are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. DESCRIPTION:“Those who dwell among the beauties and systems of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” – Rachel CarsonWe’re so excited to welcome Ridgefield artist\, wildlife photographer\, teacher and observer extraordinaire to the farm! Spend the day on Plas Newydd Farm\, connecting with nature.  Nature journaling is the process of being present in a space\, looking carefully at the world around us\, documenting and expressing what we see and wonder. Whether you are a new or veteran nature journaler\, come with an open mind\, love of nature\, and permission to question and create. You do not have to be an artist to benifit from nature journalling. We often see beautiful pages of botanical drawings on Pinterest and other social media and feel intimidated. The benefits and essence of nature journalling lie in the process and time spent slowing down to look carefully and build a connection to the world we live in. We will spend time building your  skills from wherever you are in your artistic process\, filling your tool box so you can feeling more confident in expressing your ideas the way you see them. The day will be a balance of building skills to better capture what we see\, and active exploration and observation out in the field. We will work on drawing techniques used for observation\, layout/design\, color\, and use of watercolors. We believe strongly that nature journaling is one of the most intimate and accessible ways to be in a landscape. You don’t need to be an “Artist” to join us — just come with a willingness to learn\, a desire to observe the world around you and an interest to wonder! Please bring a lunch and refillable water bottle and anything you need to be comfortable outdoors in early September. It was in school that she decided to combine her passion for art with the need to share that through education. She majored in both printmaking and child development\, continuing on to recieve her Masters in Education with an emphasis on art education. She continued on to teach graduate courses in art education and worked at the LA County Museum of Art before returning home to the beautiful PNW.  When she returned\, she continued teaching and running her own art studio\, bringing art to both children and adults. Drawing and painting have always been a huge part of her life and how she documents and shares the natural world around her. While raising her family\, photography began to take on a greater and greater role in how she captures the world around her\, especially nature.  Now she is an avid wildlife photographer that loves to immerse herself in nature and bring its beauty to others.  Many years ago\, she was introduced to the fabulous work of John Muir Laws\, the guru and driving force of nature journalling. She was instantly drawn in\, seeing an intersection of all the things she loves.  Personally\, she loved the stillness and connection to nature it provided—a perfect platform for closer\, more thoughtful observation and questioning.  Even more importantly\, she was drawn to the important role nature journalling can play in helping people connect with the preciousness and fragility of our rapidly changing world. She believes the most powerful way to inspire people to care for our earth is the help them build meaningful connections with nature\, whether you bring nature’s story to people through photography\, or bring people to nature to connect with its smallest pieces through nature journalling.

SUMMARY:Exploring Transitions -- A multi-disciplinary workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Vancouver artist Sharon Svec as we engage with the land and the changing seasons to explore the theme of transitions from many angles. Through a multidisciplinary arts approach\, workshop attendees will discuss transition\, reflect on transition\, plan an output based on their discussion/reflection\, and execute the output. Participants will have the option to have a recorded live performance at the end of the session. This workshop will serve to support personal\, as well as ecological transition\, with a focus on seasons\, cycles and natural patterns. Participants whose art-form requires specific tools/instruments will need to provide their own for this workshop. SUMMARY:Inspired By Place:  Open Air Monotypes on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:NEW TIME and PRICE! — Now just 2 days!With Nanette Wallace and Lisa Ellis. In this two-day workshop we will create monotypes outdoors\, inspired by our surroundings at the beautiful Plas Newydd farm. This large family farm located alongside the Lewis River has a diverse landscape\, with rolling fields\, mature forests\, old barns\, wild flowers and plenty of watery goodness to draw inspiration from\, and a lovely farmhouse for us to take refuge in. Inspiration can take many forms when working in and around nature\, and any direction that inspires you will be supported in this workshop\, representational or non-representation. We will create one of a kind prints on paper\, monotypes\, with an emphasis on light\, value\, impulse\, experimentation and joy! We will apply and remove ink onto printing surfaces\, (aka plates) with brayers\, cotton cloths\, brushes\, and other tools to make original singular images printed on paper. This workshop will include a combination of instruction\, demonstration and individual work time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered. The workshop is open to all levels\, 18+; no prior experience is necessary. Workshop materials will be included with the exception of paper. Each participant will begin with some paper to experiment with\, and additional paper will be sold on a per-sheet basis. Each sheet is large enough to print 2 to 12 monotypes\, depending upon the size of your plate. Sheets of high quality printmaking paper cost up to $7.50 each\, plan to budget $15 (or more) for additional paper. We will provide an optional material list prior to the workshop; recommended papers will be listed on the materials list if you prefer to bring your own.The workshop will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day (Saturday & Sunday). Light snacks\, coffee\, tea and water will be available free of charge. Participants should plan to bring lunch for each day\, comfortable shoes for walking and standing\, and layers of clothing for working outside in the fickle spring weather.  A $50 materials fee is included in the cost of the ticket for basic materials. DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day on the farm celebrating the arts\, and some of Ridgefield and Clark County’s most creative souls. DESCRIPTION:***Canceled***Ecopoetics with Daniela Naomi MolnarWhat does it mean to write WITH a place\, to consider a place as a wise collaborator rather than a backdrop? Through guided prompts and examples\, this class will explore how place can be a medium that twines with the medium of language within the vessel of a poem. You will learn how to braid your own voice with the voices of the earth in the inspiring company of others. You’ll also get an introduction to the vast world of contemporary and historical ecopoetics\, a field that is fascinated by how places are made by poems and how poems make places. If weather allows\, we will be outside for part of the day. No previous experience is required though a familiarity with writing and/or reading poetry will be helpful. Please bring writing materials and a bag lunch\, and come ready to spend some time outdoors.  Coffee\, tea and snacks will be provided throughout the day.Please let us know at arts@pnfarm.com if you have have accommodation needs\, or if cost is a barrier. Daniela Naomi Molnar is an artist\, poet\, and writer collaborating with the mediums of language\, image\, paint\, pigment\, and place. Her work is the subject of a front-page feature in the Los Angeles Times\, an Oregon Art Beat profile\, an entry in the Oregon Encyclopedia\, a feature in Poetry Daily\, and has been recognized by numerous grants\, fellowships\, and residencies. DESCRIPTION:WORKSHOP UPDATE — NOW JUST ONE DAY! Join us on October 21st  from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm!In this collaboration with the fungal world\, Ridgefield artist Barbara AW Wright will share mushroom knowledge and teach her method for creating art from mushroom spore prints. In the morning\, we will use Barbara’s prepared spore prints to make our own unique collages\, and after lunch Barbara will lead participants on a foraging expedition to gather mushrooms from the farm\, so you can bring home a kit to keep the work going in your home studio!All materials will be provided\, and a materials fee will be included in the ticket cost. Please plan to bring sturdy walking shoes\, clothes that match the weather\, and a sack lunch. Coffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. $10 per person. SUMMARY:Sun Transformations: Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:RAIN DELAY — THIS WORKSHOP IS CANCELLED AND WILL BE OFFERED AGAIN NEXT SUN SEASON! Join us for this all-day workshop exploring the captivating process of cyanotypes! We will use our imaginations\, chance\, and the magic of the sun to create stunning blue and white works of art. Cyanotype is an alternative photo process which uses chemicals and sunlight to create wonderfully mysterious pictures when rinsed in water! Also known as “sun prints”\, this accessible medium involves placing objects and materials onto treated paper\, becoming blue wherever the sun’s rays have reached it. This process is filled with surprises\, so bring your curiosity\, trust and openness with you to this workshop!Facilitator Rachel Mulder (she/her) is an artist and printmaker who indulges in experientiality. She will share this much-beloved practice with you in a hands-on\, exploratory way. We will begin with a wandering tour of the farm where we can gather plant materials and inspiration. Then Rachel will provide a brief demo and share some examples of her work. Each participant will get to create several smaller cyanotypes for the first half of this workshop using high quality hand-coated watercolor paper. After lunch\, we will discuss our experiments from the first half\, Rachel will offer additional techniques to explore\, and participants can create more works. Larger sheets of treated paper will be offered\, including a large scale collaborative piece for us to indulge in!We will utilize plant friends and other natural objects found on the farm\, as well as fabrics\, and an assortment of random objects. Feel empowered to bring your own special treasures\, as long as you don’t mind them baking in the sun for a bit.Ticket price includes $25 materials fee. Snack offerings of coffee\, tea and baked goods\, with gluten and dairy free options and fruit will be available throughout the day.  Please Bring:  Sack lunchWater bottleSturdy shoes for walking (electric cart or car available for the tour if needed for accessibility)Any treasures you want to use in your cyanotypesAccess notes: Masks strongly encouraged while indoors\, and Rachel will be wearing hers at all times. The main workspace where we begin our works of art will be indoors\, and we will venture out into the sun to expose and rinse our cyanotypes. Please dress appropriately for hot weather\, sun\, and clothing that will not mind potential water splashes. The space is NOT fully wheel-chair accessible. Rachel Mulder lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with her two cats\, Opal and Tomasina. She was born in rural Wisconsin and when she was small she spent a lot of time sitting in the grass staring\, obsessing about animals\, watching cartoons and peeling her skin off. A process-oriented artist\, her work vacillates back and forth between meticulous obsession and playful experimentation. She makes drawings using a variety of media that often yield printmakerly textures – residual effects from earning her BFA in Printmaking at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2007.

DESCRIPTION:*** This workshop is sold out. Email arts@pnfarm.com to be added to the waiting list. ***This two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts to capture the light\, atmosphere and emotion of the landscape. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd Farm property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and exercises.Please note this is a two-day workshop\, running from 8am-6pm both days. We will provide light snacks throughout the day.  Scott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was most-recently featured in the February/March issue of Plein Air Magazine.  www.scottgellatly.com  MATERIALS LISTThis workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. Color Palette:Titanium White (150ml or 3 @ 37ml)Cadmium Yellow LightIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)Cadmium OrangeQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)Ultramarine BlueCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)Painting Panels:Ampersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. 1 @ 12” x 16 Panel taped out into a 2 x 2 grid with masking tape. 3 – 4 @ larger panels in sizes between 9” x 12” to 12” x 16”. Wet-panel Carrier:These are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. For example\, their 10” x 12” carrier will accommodate panels that share the 12” dimension (including 9” x 12”\, and 6” x 12”). In lieu of a pre-made wet panel carrier\, a couple clean pizza boxes will work just fine. Easel:The main consideration with a plein air easel is that it is lightweight\, but large enough to support the size of paintings we’ll be doing in class. I recommend the UGO Pochade Boxes. They come in three different sizes – the middle and largest sizes will work well for the size of panels listed above. Unless your outdoor easel is equipped with legs\, you will need a tripod. I’ve used the MeFOTO Backpacker for years\, as its sturdy and lightweight. Palette:If the palette is not already part of your plein air easel\, consider using a class palette approximately 9” x 12”. Hardware store glass\, backed with foam core with duct tape around the perimeter is a cost-effective option. Oil/Acrylic Painting Brushes:Filbert or Flat\, three different sizes. DESCRIPTION:Wander and Wonder: Writing in the Woods with Jennifer (JP) Perrine This class\, held outdoors in the woods here on Plas Newydd Farm\, will guide you in practicing skills associated with shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing—a gentle\, meditative approach to being with nature. The class will include several invitations to explore your senses and your relationship with nature\, time for written reflection\, and opportunities to share your writing. You’ll learn approaches to writing and to being with nature that you can use every day to foster relaxation\, connection\, and wonder.  All forest bathing and writing prompts may be practiced seated\, standing\, or walking/rolling. The class will be entirely outdoors\, so please dress appropriately. Their poems\, stories\, and essays have been described as “muscular\,” “hard-working\,” “disciplined\,” “grimly witty\,” “scientific\,” “ecstatic\,” “sensuous\,” “mythic\,” and “full of surprises.” A 2022 Oregon Humanities Community Storytelling Fellow and a 2022-23 Independent Publishing Resource Center Artist-in-Residence\, Perrine lives in Portland\, Oregon\, where they cohost the Incite: Queer Writers Read series\, teach writing and gender studies\, and serve as a wilderness guide. Their writing classes—which range from Surrealist writing games to poetic constraints to nature writing–foster play\, experimentation\, and creativity. In all their classes\, their goal is to help us build relationships with our inner wisdom\, with each other\, and with the more-than-human world.

SUMMARY:Intro to Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:(Price includes a $50 equipment fee)\n\n\n\n\nBlock printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier\, and easy way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition of printmaking\, spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. From the Japanese woodcut moku hanga prints\, depicting the “Floating World” or Ukiyo-e; to the 2000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich history of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance\, printmaking continues to be a way to make art accessible to the masses both in terms of owning the finished product and in terms of making the art itself. \n\nIn this one-day workshop\, you will learn about block printing materials and tools\, how to carve a basic image using easy-cut materials\, how to carve a more detailed image into a linoleum block\, and how to prepare paper and ink to print a numbered edition of a complete work of art. \n\n\n\nStudents will leave the class with a finished print of their own making\, a carved easy cut and a carved lino block for producing numbered editions at home\, and all of the equipment necessary to continue on the adventure of block printmaking on their own.     \n\n\n\nEquipment fee pays for easy cut block\, linoleum block\, Speedball linoleum cutter with interchangeable tips\, bench hook/inking plate\, and brayer.  \n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea and light snacks will be provided. Participants should bring a bag lunch and comfortable walking shoes!\n\n                                \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Instructor:  Brian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has been a part of group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. He began working exclusively in block printing in the late 2000s. He is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose. He works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.

SUMMARY:The Poetics of Place
DESCRIPTION:Join Christopher Luna for a day of poetry on Plas Newydd Farm. Christopher will lead a group of eight to ten writers in a day of mindful exploration of place and poetics. We will read\, write and walk in mindful observation. Abby Braithwaite of the Plas Newydd Farm Arts Initiative will lead the group on a short walk and share a brief history of the farm. (Walk will be adapted the mobility needs of the group.) Poetry provides a way to explore our universe and document this process of discovery. We will read poets who have engaged with nature and complete a series of writing exercises. There will be an emphasis on mindful observation and real-time tracking of our daily movements. We will also discuss the role that observation and research play in building a body of reality-based work with the potential to engender compassion\, understanding\, and progressive social action. Christopher Luna is a poet\, editor\, teacher\, writing coach\, and artist who served as the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County\, WA from 2013-2017. Luna has an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. He is the co-founder\, with Toni Lumbrazo Luna\, of Printed Matter Vancouver\, an editing service and small press for Northwest writers. He and Morgan Paige co-host the LGBTQ+ friendly\, all ages and uncensored Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic in Vancouver\, WA\, founded by Christopher in 2004. Christopher Luna’s books include Voracity (Lightship Press\, 2022)\, Exchanging Wisdom: A Guide for Parents of the Autonomous (The Poetry Box\, 2021 with Angelo Luna)\, Message from the Vessel in a Dream (Flowstone Press\, 2018)\, Brutal Glints of Moonlight\, and The Flame Is Ours: The Letters of Stan Brakhage and Michael McClure 1961-1978 (Big Bridge).Please bring a bag lunch\, water\, pen and paper and comfortable shoes for walking.
