SUMMARY:Foraged Fiber Porch Brooms with Dan Hawkins
DESCRIPTION:Come on out to the farm for a sweeping good time! \n\n\n\nWe are so excited to welcome Portland artist Dan Hawkins to Ridgefield for his first PN Farm Arts workshop! \n\n\n\nSome of the finer details to come\, but here’s what we know so far — over the course of a Saturday\, participants will have the opportunity to craft porch brooms from two PN Farm-foraged fibers — a native sedge\, and the wildly invasive Reed’s canary grass\, along with some traditional broom straw (sorghum) to fill things out!  \n\n\n\nWe’re hoping to get out on the landscape for this one\, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping! A $20 materials fee is included in the ticket price.  \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge\, stove and microwave if needed). \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout your teacher \n\n\n\nDan was born in Maine and has worked as an architect & carpenter in China\, Denmark\, England\, and the United States. In 2021\, he moved to Portland\, OR\, where he started Bodge\, a platform for his sculpture\, woodwork\, and brooms. His work explores domestic tools\, as well as the craft traditions and techniques associated with those objects. Dan also teaches broom-making and woodworking classes and workshops throughout the Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY:Linoleum Block Printing -- With Brian Tibbetts
DESCRIPTION:Linoleum Block Printing: A Two-Day Workshop Experience with Brian Tibbetts The number one wish from the folks who attended Brian’s first workshop back in 2023 was that they had another day to refine their skills\, so that’s what we are offering up for this spring. We hope you’ll join us!Block printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier\, and easy way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition of printmaking\, spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. From the Japanese woodcut moku hanga prints\, depicting the “Floating World” or Ukiyo-e; to the 2000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich history of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance\, printmaking continues to be a way to make art accessible to the masses both in terms of owning the finished product and in terms of making the art itself. In this comprehensive two-day workshop\, designed to suit both beginners and those with some experience\, you’ll dive deep into the art of block printing through hands-on learning and exploration of both single-color and multi-color techniques. Day One: Foundations of Block Printing Introduction to block printing materials and toolsUnderstanding different carving materials and their propertiesBasic image carving techniques using easy-cut materialsAdvanced carving techniques for linoleum blocksPaper preparation and ink selectionPrinting techniques for creating clean\, consistent editionsRegistration methods for precise printingCreating and printing a numbered edition of your first block printDay Two: Multi-Color Techniques and Advanced Methods Introduction to multi-color block printing approachesColor theory and ink mixing for printmakingRegistration systems for multiple colorsReduction printing techniquesMultiple block printing methodsColor overlay effects and transparencyAlternative inking techniques including gradients and selective inkingCreation of a multi-color print using your choice of techniqueThroughout both days\, participants will receive individual guidance and feedback while working at their own pace. More experienced participants will have opportunities to explore advanced techniques and push their creative boundaries. All participants will leave with their own completed editions of both single-color and multi-color prints. Materials Included: Carving tools (for use during workshop)Easy-cut practice blocksLinoleum blocksBasic inking suppliesPaper for printingRegistration guidesSafety equipmentWhat to Bring: Sketches or reference images for your printsApron or work clothesNotebook for taking notesOptional: any personal carving tools you prefer to useLight breakfast\, coffee\, tea and water will be provided. Please bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Participants have access to refrigerator\, microwave and stove\, and a 1 hour lunch break will be built into both days. You will note two separate tickets below\, with different materials costs included in each. Please be sure to choose the appropriate one so we can have your materials ready for you!  If you are a beginner with no tools\, your ticket will include an $85  fee for everything you need for the weekend. If you are coming equipped with your own tools\, the fee is $45 for linoleum blocks\, ink\, and paper. Space is limited to ensure individual attention. All skill levels welcome. Participants must be 16 or older due to sharp tool usage. Your Instructor: Brian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has been a part of group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. He began working primarily in block printing in the 2010s and is a member of Print Arts Northwest\, and was a PAN Emerging Printmaking Resident in 2023/24. He is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose. He works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.  Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. While we strive to make our workshops accessible to all\, we are located in a historical home that does not have accessible restrooms; our lowest entrance has two steps to enter. We may be able to accommodate you with advance notice\, so don’t be shy to reach out. We do not require masks at most events\, but we do have masks available on site\, and run high quality air filters\, and ask that if you are not feeling well\, please stay home. Refunds or credit for a future workshop can be made available. We do have a scholarship fund! Reach out to arts@pnfarm.com to request financial aid for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling with Betsy Jager
DESCRIPTION:“Those who dwell among the beauties and systems of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” – Rachel CarsonWe’re so excited to welcome Ridgefield artist\, wildlife photographer\, teacher and observer extraordinaire to the farm! Spend the day on Plas Newydd Farm\, connecting with nature.  Nature journaling is the process of being present in a space\, looking carefully at the world around us\, documenting and expressing what we see and wonder. Whether you are a new or veteran nature journaler\, come with an open mind\, love of nature\, and permission to question and create. You do not have to be an artist to benifit from nature journalling. We often see beautiful pages of botanical drawings on Pinterest and other social media and feel intimidated. The benefits and essence of nature journalling lie in the process and time spent slowing down to look carefully and build a connection to the world we live in. We will spend time building your  skills from wherever you are in your artistic process\, filling your tool box so you can feeling more confident in expressing your ideas the way you see them. The day will be a balance of building skills to better capture what we see\, and active exploration and observation out in the field. We will work on drawing techniques used for observation\, layout/design\, color\, and use of watercolors. We believe strongly that nature journaling is one of the most intimate and accessible ways to be in a landscape. You don’t need to be an “Artist” to join us — just come with a willingness to learn\, a desire to observe the world around you and an interest to wonder! Please bring a lunch and refillable water bottle and anything you need to be comfortable outdoors in early September. Coffee\, tea\, and light snacks will be provided. We plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! If you have mobility or other accessibility issues\, please reach out to Abby at arts@pnfarm.com to discuss how we may be able to support you for this field-based event. Additionally\, please feel free to reach out to Abby if you need to access a full or partial scholarship from the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund in order to attend the class and/or purchase supplies. A note on materials: There are two ticket types for this class\, depending whether you need materials or you will provide your own. Please read the following\, and choose the ticket that best reflects your needs. 1) Workshop cost + materials includes the workshop cost and all materials needed. They will be ready for you when you arrive and you take them home with you to continue your nature journalling. 2) Workshop cost only (no materials provided) is just the workshop\, and assumes that you have or will get your own materials. We do have limited loaner supplies on hand\, so if you need just one or two things from the list\, or you aren’t sure about making an investment just for this class\, please email Abby to discuss and she will guide you to the best ticket option for you.   Materials List:Mixed Media Sketchbook with thick pages\, that will accept pen and watercolorSuggestion: Canson Mixed Media 9×12Quality Watercolor Set with an assortment of colorsSuggestion: Winsor & Newton Cotman Field Set 14 colorsWatercolor Brush The brush (size 4) that comes  in your travel set is a nice universal size. It was in school that she decided to combine her passion for art with the need to share that through education. She majored in both printmaking and child development\, continuing on to recieve her Masters in Education with an emphasis on art education. She continued on to teach graduate courses in art education and worked at the LA County Museum of Art before returning home to the beautiful PNW.  When she returned\, she continued teaching and running her own art studio\, bringing art to both children and adults. Drawing and painting have always been a huge part of her life and how she documents and shares the natural world around her. While raising her family\, photography began to take on a greater and greater role in how she captures the world around her\, especially nature.  Now she is an avid wildlife photographer that loves to immerse herself in nature and bring its beauty to others.  Many years ago\, she was introduced to the fabulous work of John Muir Laws\, the guru and driving force of nature journalling. She was instantly drawn in\, seeing an intersection of all the things she loves.  Personally\, she loved the stillness and connection to nature it provided—a perfect platform for closer\, more thoughtful observation and questioning.  Even more importantly\, she was drawn to the important role nature journalling can play in helping people connect with the preciousness and fragility of our rapidly changing world. She believes the most powerful way to inspire people to care for our earth is the help them build meaningful connections with nature\, whether you bring nature’s story to people through photography\, or bring people to nature to connect with its smallest pieces through nature journalling.

SUMMARY:Random Weave Baskets with Julie Johnson
DESCRIPTION:New date!!It’s basket weaving time! In this class we’ll explore the basics of random weave by creating a melon-sized basket. Working with willows and red osier dogwood harvested from Plas Newydd Farm earlier in the year\, we’ll create baskets that are a true collaboration with the farm’s gorgeous wetland landscapes. All skill levels are welcome! Please bring a lunch\, clothes and shoes to be outside if weather allows a lunch time walk\, and your favorite pruning or kitchen shears. Julie Johnson has been weaving baskets for over 25 years and works primarily with plant materials that she and her husband gather during their explorations of Pacific Northwest landscapes. While also practicing many more traditional forms of weaving\, sculptural random weave baskets have become some of the most artistically-freeing forms of woven expression for her. For more of Julie’s work see: Columbia Basin Basketry Guild: https://www.basketryguild.org/julie-johnsonInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/florafiberdye/

SUMMARY:Farm Arts Open House\, Take Two
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day on the farm celebrating the arts\, and some of Ridgefield and Clark County’s most creative souls. All ages are welcome! There will be mini-workshops\, tasty food\, an art showcase\, and maybe even a farm tour. It’s not to be missed! Come learn about what’s in store for our second year\, and learn how you can be a part of things! We hope to see you! (The thing about beginnings is that it’s hard to say exactly when a thing gets started! December was the anniversary of the first paid arts workshop on Plas Newydd Farm. January is the anniversary of our giant planning meeting back in 2020\, before the world shifted under our feet pandemic-style. But March? March of 2023 saw the first two workshops under the official banner of the PN Farm Arts Initiative\, with Roxanne Bash and Christopher Luna paving the way for all the good that came after. Plus\, it’s Abby’s birthday month! So plenty to celebrate here\, with our second attempt at an Open House!)Here’s a tentative schedule. The blocks may move around\, and there may be additional offerings\, but here’s what it’s looking like at the moment!10 am: Book Arts with Jody & Alan Adams 11 am: Poetry Workshop with Christopher Luna 12 pm: Dried Flower Cards with Barbara AW Wright 1 pm: Weaving with Elliot Gajan 3 pm: Origami with Phuong Tran\, Megan Dudley\, and Bonnie Donovan

SUMMARY:Craft your own pen! – Wood Turning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 3rd for a wood-turning workshop and craft your own ball point pen from wood grown right here on the farm!Guided by sculptor Lila Ferber\, participants will  leave this class with a functioning ballpoint twist pen and simple instructions on how to change the ink. Never turned on the lathe before\, or interested in learning a new wood-turning skill?  This class is for you!  We’ll learn about fingernail gouges and carbide tools\, and how to go from raw wood to a finished product\, going through the steps of cutting\, drilling\, gluing and turning our chosen wood\, using lathes from Lila’s mobile wood-turning studio. Each participant will make their own unique pen shape\, then sand and finish it with walnut oil and beeswax.  At the end\, you will choose from gold\, silver\, and copper hardware\, to finish your custom-made writing implement\, ready for your own words\, or a perfect gift! How cool is that?? No experience or equipment needed. Bring lunch\, closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty\, and a readiness to learn a new skill! Class size is limited to just 4 participants\, so don’t wait to sign up! Lila Ferber is a sculptor with 9 years of experience in the field\, including turning on the lathe and carving wood\, ice\, stone\, sand\, and foam.  She received her BFA in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri\, and has spent years working at sculpture parks and museums around the US.  Studying under legendary KC woodturner Jon Wilson has inspired her to continue honing her craft and to share it with any and all eager students.  She encourages her class to channel their inner child by being creative and experimenting\, all while gaining new skills\, and friendships along the way.  Follow up questions are always welcome and free of charge as students continue turning on their own at home.

SUMMARY:Pysansky—The Art of Ukrainian Easter Egg Dying
DESCRIPTION:**Please note change of date! This workshop has moved to Saturday\, March 18th!** Ever wonder how those beautiful Ukrainian Eggs\, called Pysanky\, are made? Come find out in an afternoon over tea and musing with friends (old and new) how this batiking style of egg dyeing is done. All supplies provided\, and yours to take home. Ukrainians have carried this traditional egg decorating form\, and exchanging with loved ones\, from Pagan times to modern day with geometric symbols designed to deliver well wishes to the receiver.\n\n\n\n\nRoxanne Bash has been making Pysanky since the age of 17. Although she is not Ukrainian\, she learned this traditional artform from a friend whose family immigrated from the Ukraine many years ago. The family impressed on her that they were sharing this tradition with others in the hopes of keeping it alive. This class is Roxanne’s way of helping accomplish that goal.\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop fee covers the cost of supplies\, and in lieu of collecting a fee for her time\, Roxanne invites participants to make a donation to support Ukrainian war relief and refugee efforts. Feel free to make a donation to the organization of your choice\, or bring a cash donation to the event and we will make a plan for a group donation.\n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea and light snacks will be provided.
