SUMMARY:Plein Air at the Forest Edge
DESCRIPTION:2-day Plein Air workshop on the farm with Jef Gunn. Plein Air painting is simply painting in the open air. That’s what we’ll do. Painting itself can be tricky\, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition\, simplification\, color\, palette layout (and management!) \, gumption\, place\, light and shadow\, mystery. This will be quite the adventure in painting in the out of doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. A farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers\, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color\, composition\, palette management\, and keeping your cool while managing all that!It’s going to be a great weekend out on the land. Jef is an experienced teacher with a wealth of knowledge to offer and we’re so excited to welcome him to the farm for his first Ridgefield workshop. We will provide coffee\, tea\, water and snacks. Participants should bring water bottle\, lunch\, clothes for the weather\, and the materials listed below.If you have any difficulty acquiring materials\, please get in touch and we will see how we can help! As always\, limited scholarships are available. While we work to accommodate participants with mobility support needs\, this workshop is out on the land and may not be accessible to all. For questions about materials\, scholarships and accessibility\, please email arts@pnfarm.com and we will work to meet your needs!Jef Gunn has studied and practiced drawing and painting since the 1970s\, with formative experiences in California\, Barcelona\, Paris and Seattle. He began working in encaustic in 1985\, integrating materials such as paper\, ink\, tar\, fabric\, and gold leaf to explore layered meanings influenced by Asian art. His work has been exhibited nationally\, including solo and group shows at Oregon State University\, Marylhurst University\, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. In 2006\, he co-curated the national encaustic show Impulse. Jef has taught painting and drawing in Seattle and Portland since the mid-1990s\, and his work is represented by galleries in Seattle\, Edison\, Honolulu\, and Portland. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge\, and helpful insight\, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint.

SUMMARY:Gelli Plate Landscape Collage
DESCRIPTION:We’re so excited to welcome the multi-talented Ann Fleming back to the farm for a full-day gelli plate workshop. Her mini-workshop at the Open House was standing room only\, so she’s coming back for a full day of exploration and creativity!Gelli plates are a wonderful tool. They can be used for mono-printing and for creating unique\, spontaneous\, and original collage papers. In this workshop we will focus on the creation of collage papers. Once we have lots of papers completed we will create abstracted landscapes influenced by the beautiful surroundings of PN Farm. Along the way Ann will teach you how to look for value shapes using a Notan application.Each participant will have the chance to complete at least one piece of original artwork\, along with starting their own collection of collage papers for future art works. A $10 material fee is included in the price of this ticket. There will be snacks\, tea\, coffee and water available throughout the day; please plan on bringing a lunch (microwave\, stovetop\, fridge and toaster available for your use). Bring some outdoor gear for possible short stroll\, and come prepared to get messy!Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. While we strive to make our workshops accessible to all\, we are located in a historical home that does not have accessible restrooms at this point; our lowest entrance has two steps to enter. Reach out to arts@pnfarm.com to request financial aid for this workshop!About the instructor: After a successful 25 year career as a potter creating architectural elements and brightly painted functional ware\, Ann began to focus on sculpture.  Her bronze figurative sculptures have been shown extensively across the Western US\, with over 350 pieces in private and public collections. In 2016 Ann turned her focus to painting and mixed media.  Using acrylics and the addition of handmade collage papers\, Ann describes her process…“I want the surface of the painting to draw you in as much as the subject or the story.”  Her work is figurative in nature\, focusing on the female form. With a Masters degree in art and teaching\, Ann taught art at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts\, Multnomah Art Center\, Lewis and Clark College and has taught several workshops.  Ann has also been active in arts organizing\, contributing to the founding of art festivals and co-operative galleries and doing board work for multiple art organizations.

DESCRIPTION:We’re so delighted to welcome Portland-based painter and teacher Scott Gellatly back to the farm for another two-day dive into plein air painting! This workshop is likely to fill up\, so register early to guaranty your spot!This two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts while capturing the light\, atmosphere\, and emotion of the landscape in a bold\, responsive manner. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and demonstrations.We plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! Wet-panel Carrier: These are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. SUMMARY:Inspired By Place:  Open Air Monotypes on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:NEW TIME and PRICE! — Now just 2 days!With Nanette Wallace and Lisa Ellis. In this two-day workshop we will create monotypes outdoors\, inspired by our surroundings at the beautiful Plas Newydd farm. This large family farm located alongside the Lewis River has a diverse landscape\, with rolling fields\, mature forests\, old barns\, wild flowers and plenty of watery goodness to draw inspiration from\, and a lovely farmhouse for us to take refuge in. Inspiration can take many forms when working in and around nature\, and any direction that inspires you will be supported in this workshop\, representational or non-representation. We will create one of a kind prints on paper\, monotypes\, with an emphasis on light\, value\, impulse\, experimentation and joy! We will apply and remove ink onto printing surfaces\, (aka plates) with brayers\, cotton cloths\, brushes\, and other tools to make original singular images printed on paper. This workshop will include a combination of instruction\, demonstration and individual work time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered. The workshop is open to all levels\, 18+; no prior experience is necessary. Workshop materials will be included with the exception of paper. Each participant will begin with some paper to experiment with\, and additional paper will be sold on a per-sheet basis. Each sheet is large enough to print 2 to 12 monotypes\, depending upon the size of your plate. Sheets of high quality printmaking paper cost up to $7.50 each\, plan to budget $15 (or more) for additional paper. We will provide an optional material list prior to the workshop; recommended papers will be listed on the materials list if you prefer to bring your own.The workshop will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day (Saturday & Sunday). Light snacks\, coffee\, tea and water will be available free of charge. Participants should plan to bring lunch for each day\, comfortable shoes for walking and standing\, and layers of clothing for working outside in the fickle spring weather.  A $50 materials fee is included in the cost of the ticket for basic materials. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. $10 per person. For example\, their 10” x 12” carrier will accommodate panels that share the 12” dimension (including 9” x 12”\, and 6” x 12”). In lieu of a pre-made wet panel carrier\, a couple clean pizza boxes will work just fine. Easel:The main consideration with a plein air easel is that it is lightweight\, but large enough to support the size of paintings we’ll be doing in class. I recommend the UGO Pochade Boxes. They come in three different sizes – the middle and largest sizes will work well for the size of panels listed above. Unless your outdoor easel is equipped with legs\, you will need a tripod. I’ve used the MeFOTO Backpacker for years\, as its sturdy and lightweight. Palette:If the palette is not already part of your plein air easel\, consider using a class palette approximately 9” x 12”. Hardware store glass\, backed with foam core with duct tape around the perimeter is a cost-effective option. Oil/Acrylic Painting Brushes:Filbert or Flat\, three different sizes. DESCRIPTION:Are you ready for the world to become your palette? This workshop will introduce you to the vibrant world of natural pigments in our ecosystem. You’ll learn how to ethically forage pigments and transform them into any type of paint or ink. You’ll also learn about pigments as a way to creatively engage with ecological issues\, including climate change. This course is appropriate for all skill levels. No experience of any kind is necessary. Ticket price includes $15 materials fee. Attendees should bring outdoor attire (including sunscreen and mosquito repellent)\, water\, and a sack lunch. Light snacks will be provided.Daniela Naomi Molnar is an artist\, poet\, and writer working with the mediums of language\, image\, paint\, pigment\, and place. She is also a wilderness guide\, educator\, and eternal student. Her work is the subject of a recent Oregon Art Beat profile\, a front-page feature in the Los Angeles Times\, and an entry in the Oregon Encyclopedia. Her visual work has been shown nationally\, is in public and private collections internationally\, and has been recognized by numerous grants\, fellowships\, and residencies. She founded the Art + Ecology program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and co-founded the backcountry artist residency Signal Fire. Her book CHORUS was selected by Kazim Ali as the winner of Omnidawn’s 2022 1st /2nd Book Prize. SUMMARY:Pysansky—The Art of Ukrainian Easter Egg Dying
DESCRIPTION:**Please note change of date! This workshop has moved to Saturday\, March 18th!** Ever wonder how those beautiful Ukrainian Eggs\, called Pysanky\, are made? Come find out in an afternoon over tea and musing with friends (old and new) how this batiking style of egg dyeing is done. All supplies provided\, and yours to take home. Ukrainians have carried this traditional egg decorating form\, and exchanging with loved ones\, from Pagan times to modern day with geometric symbols designed to deliver well wishes to the receiver.\n\n\n\n\nRoxanne Bash has been making Pysanky since the age of 17. Although she is not Ukrainian\, she learned this traditional artform from a friend whose family immigrated from the Ukraine many years ago. The family impressed on her that they were sharing this tradition with others in the hopes of keeping it alive. This class is Roxanne’s way of helping accomplish that goal.\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop fee covers the cost of supplies\, and in lieu of collecting a fee for her time\, Roxanne invites participants to make a donation to support Ukrainian war relief and refugee efforts. Feel free to make a donation to the organization of your choice\, or bring a cash donation to the event and we will make a plan for a group donation.\n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea and light snacks will be provided.
