DESCRIPTION:*Please Watch This Space for a New Date!*An Invitation to a Journey — Discovering our Relationship with the Environment through PoetryIn this  one-day poetry workshop with Clark County’s poet-laureate Susan Dingle\, writers of all skill levels will be invited to immerse themselves in the unique landscape of Plas Newydd Farm. We will practice mindfulness\, learn how to notice features of the environment\, consider our impact on the land.  How does development exploit the land? How can we be a friend to the land.  We will also read excerpts from works of eco-journalism and eco-poetry.Light breakfast\, coffee\, tea and water will be provided. Please bring a notebook and pen\, a sack lunch\, water bottle and appropriate shoes and clothes to be out in the weather. Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. While we strive to make our workshops accessible to all\, we are located in a historical home that does not have accessible restrooms at this point; our lowest entrance has two steps to enter. We do not require masks at most events\, but we do have masks available on site\, and run high quality air filters\, and ask that if you are not feeling well\, please stay home. Refunds or credit for a future workshop can be made available. We do have a scholarship fund! Reach out to arts@pnfarm.com to request financial aid for this workshop!About the instructor:SUSAN DINGLE (née Susan Grathwohl) believes poetry empowers people of every age\, race\, gender\, ethnicity or condition of life\, to appreciate the diversity of our human experience. As Clark County Poet Laureate (2024-2026) Susan Dingle encourages emerging\, established and future poets to discover and share their voices in workshops and events throughout Clark County. She received an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois/Chicago\, an MSW from SUNY Stony Brook and a Certificate in Congregational Leadership from Dubuque Theological Seminary. Susan is currently completing an MFA in Poetry at Pacific University. She has been writing\, publishing and performing poetry since the ‘70s. In 2020\, her first chapbook\, “Parting Gifts” won honorable mention and publication by Local Gems (NY)\, and a second chapbook “In Pilgrim Drag” was published by Finishing Line Press (KY). Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops! Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. Suggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. DESCRIPTION:New Date!!Join us  on January 25th and 26th for the first annual PN Farm Arts Festival of Pen & Ink. It’s going to be a little bit of sculpture\, a little bit of alchemy\, a little bit of geekery and a whole lot of magic—and we can’t wait to have you join us!This two-day workshop will be limited to 8 participants\, so sign up early to ensure your spot!Dreamed up over the wood lathe with sculptor Lila Ferber last February\, the Festival of Pen and Ink is for anyone who wants to get their hands in on the crafting of writing and drawing tools. In addition to Lila with her 4 traveling wood lathes\, we will be welcoming Molly Holmlund of Foraged Ink (she’s amazing\, trust me! I drove over to White Salmon last spring to take a workshop with her\, and it was lovely)\, and an as-yet unnamed but super cool book artist. Participants  will work in cohorts of four (don’t worry\, we’ll mix up our groups) and will leave the weekend with: 2  pens hand-crafted on the wood lathe\, made from fallen oak and elm harvested here on Plas Newydd FarmInk made from materials gathered on the farmA hand-bound journalA collection of short writings or quick sketches generated from prompts offered throughout the weekend. If you need a scholarship for this workshop\, please get in touch by email and we will do our best to accommodate you!Speaking of accommodations\, we have limited housing available on a first come\, first served basis. SUMMARY:Poetics of Change with Christopher Luna
DESCRIPTION:In this one-day generative and experiential poetry workshop\, participants will delve into the Poetics of Change. The group will have the opportunity to visit three locations on Plas Newydd Farm that will be essential to the future habitat and wetland restoration work planned for the farm. At each location we’ll learn a little about the past\, present and potential futures of the site\, and write to prompts inspired by each place. After our farm journey guided by PN Farm’s Abby Brathwaite and David Morgan\, we will return to the house to share some of what you have written in a safe\, supportive environment.  No experience writing poetry is necessary! Christopher and Abby will provide all the guidance needed to access this workshop!Please bring comfortable clothes and shoes for the weather\, a journal and pen\, a sack lunch and a water bottle. Scholarships are available if cost is a barrier! Please email arts@pnfarm.com to inquire. We received a generous gift to seed our scholarship fund\, and don’t want to turn anyone away if we can help it!***Please note*** While we will be driving to the locations around the farm\, there will be an opportunity to walk a short distance at each location. He is the co-founder\, with Toni Lumbrazo Luna\, of Printed Matter Vancouver\, an editing service and small press for Northwest writers. He and Morgan Paige co-host the LGBTQ+ friendly\, all ages and uncensored Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic in Vancouver\, WA\, founded by Christopher in 2004. SUMMARY:Soup and Words – Drop-in Writing Time!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit and write together! There is little I love more than sitting in a warm room with brilliant minds\, putting words on the page and sharing snippets of what we create. So I’m making the space for this in my life this year\, and I’d love to have you join me! There will be soup. There will be writing prompts. There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!) Participation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!

SUMMARY:Writing Your Tree Story\, with Kate Gray
DESCRIPTION:Come talk with the trees of Plas Newydd Farm\, and bring your tree stories with you for a one-day generative workshop with Oregon-based poet Kate Gray. Maybe you climbed trees as a kid. Maybe you picnicked under trees in parks. Maybe you made your living planting seedlings\, tending them\, and then shipping your crop to the sawmill. Maybe you’re a woodworker wanting to dig deep into the stories your lumber carries. Whether you are a tree-lover or just a human who lives in a wooden house\, touches paper\, or\, for that matter\, breathes\, trees are a part of your story. What tree(s) shaped you? In this generative workshop\, you’ll write the story of a tree in your life\, whether it shielded you\, grew you\, or gob-smacked you with its beauty. No tree springing to mind? We’ll make sure you have the chance to meet some of the trees of Plas Newydd Farm to spur your writing. No experience necessary. Poetry/prose/song encouraged. You’ll experience a guided meditation\, writing to prompts\, a walk in the forested landscape of Plas Newydd (weather-permitting)\, laughter\, and the Gateless Method of specific\, positive feedback. Kate Gray’s passion stems from writing\, teaching\, and volunteering. For Every Girl: New & Selected Poems was published by Widow & Orphan House in 2019. Her first full-length book of poems\, Another Sunset We Survive (Cedar House Books\, 2007) was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and followed chapbooks\, Bone-Knowing (2006)\, winner of the Gertrude Press Poetry Prize and Where She Goes (2000)\, winner of the Blue Light Chapbook Prize. Kate’s first novel\, Carry the Sky\, (Forest Avenue\, 2014) stares at bullying without blinking. In her novel-in-progress\, she narrates\, in Sylvia Plath’s voice\, what led to The Bell Jar and her suicide attempt in 1953. After 25 years teaching English at a community college\, she retired to coach writers. Kate and her partner live in a pine-and-oak forest in the mid-Columbia River Gorge with two impetuous dogs.
