We’ll dive into the layered ways the land holds metaphor\, and the ways those layers come together in a collage of words\, images and meaning. We’ll read selected poems on the theme\, write to prompts\, and have a chance to share our writing within the group. Participants will learn about Plas Newydd Farm’s past\, present and future\, and will leave the day with a handful of completed poems. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be getting out on the landscape for this one\, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping!   \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible\, as well as out on the land on rugged terrain. SUMMARY:Weave with Willow: Market Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Weave a willow market basket with Ridgefield artist Robin Brady \n\n\n\nIn this 2-day class you’ll make a round\, handled basket in the traditional European stake and strand style — a great foundation for your future explorations in basketry.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll weave with a combination of cultivated and wild willows grown right here in Ridgefield and throughout the region. We’ll spend two full days weaving our baskets\, and as time allows we’ll discuss everything from harvesting willow to prepping your materials for weaving. This is a great class for beginners\, or any weavers looking to strengthen their basic stake and strand skills. You’ll come away with your own hand-woven willow basket great for going to market\, gathering\, storage\, and everyday household use. \n\n\n\nNote – Weaving with willow is hard work! Expect to spend 7 focused weaving hours per class day\, and to use your hand and upper body strength throughout the class. \n\n\n\nTicket price includes an $80 materials fee for the willow. \n\n\n\nParticipants should provide: \n\n\n\n\nA fixed blade or locking knife\n\n\n\n\n\nYour favorite sharp pruners if you have them (or you may use the instructor provided ones)\n\n\n\n\n\nAny additional seating cushion\, back support\, or special chair you need to be comfortable\n\n\n\n\n\nLayers for sun/weather if you wish to work or have lunch outside\n\n\n\n\n\nLunch and a water bottle \n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch\, a water bottle\, and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge\, stove and microwave if needed). \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\nScholarships are available on an as-needed basis. Please email arts@pnfarm.com for more info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nRobin Brady (she/they) is a queer craftsperson\, basket weaver and willow devotee.  \n\n\n\nThey tend a cultivated willow patch at their home and gather wild willow along nearby waterways. They live on Chinook & Cowlitz land in Ridgefield\, Washington\, under passing sandhill crane migration. They come to basketry via long time devotion to crafts and skill sets that keep them a student in the practice of direct and reciprocal relationship to the living world.  \n\n\n\nAs a weaver of mixed European settler descent\, they focus primarily on styles of willow basketry with roots in countries their ancestors once wove in\, while being in awe of the many brilliant weaving traditions belonging to cultures near and far. Robin was first introduced to basketry by Margaret Mathewson and other weavers in her watershed lineage and is honored to continue the tradition of passing along this love of working with willow. \n\n\n\nSee more at www.windfallcraftandbasketry.com

SUMMARY:Soup and Words – Drop-in Writing Time!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit and write together! \nThere is little I love more than sitting in a warm room with brilliant minds\, putting words on the page and sharing snippets of what we create. So I’m making the space for this in my life this year\, and I’d love to have you join me!  \nThere will be soup. There will be writing prompts. There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!)  \nParticipation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!  \nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:A Two-Day Workshop Experience \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome PN Farm Arts favorite Brian Tibbets back to the farm for a two-day workshop! Brian is a generous teacher\, and block printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. \n\n\n\nFrom traditional Japanese woodcut block prints popular the world over; to the 2\,000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich tradition of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance—printmaking continues to make art accessible to the masses\, both in terms of owning finished work and in terms of making it. \n\n\n\nIn this comprehensive two-day workshop\, designed for both beginners and those with some experience\, you’ll dive deep into the art of block printing through hands-on learning and exploration of single-color and multi-color techniques. \n\n\n\nDay One: Foundations of Block Printing \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to block printing materials and tools\n\n\n\nUnderstanding different carving materials and their properties\n\n\n\nBasic image carving techniques using easy-cut materials\n\n\n\nAdvanced carving techniques for linoleum and woodcut blocks\n\n\n\nPaper preparation and ink selection\n\n\n\nPrinting techniques for creating clean\, consistent editions\n\n\n\nRegistration methods for precise printing\n\n\n\nPrinting a test print for designing a numbered edition of a block print\n\n\n\n\nDay Two: Multi-Color Techniques and the Provincetown Print \n\n\n\n\nOverview of multi-color block printing approaches\n\n\n\nColor theory and ink mixing for printmaking\n\n\n\nRegistration systems for multiple colors\n\n\n\nIntroduction to the Provincetown print: history\, concept\, and method\n\n\n\nDeep dive into Provincetown printing technique: working with a single block to produce multi-color prints\n\n\n\nColor overlay effects and transparency\n\n\n\nAlternative inking techniques including gradients and selective inking\n\n\n\nCreation of a Provincetown print edition\n\n\n\n\nThroughout both days\, participants will receive individual guidance and feedback while working at their own pace within the overall class schedule. More experienced participants will have opportunities to explore advanced techniques and push their creative boundaries. All participants will have the opportunity to produce test prints with instructor guidance of both a single-color print and a Provincetown print.  \n\n\n\nMaterials Included  \n\n\n\n\nCarving tools (for use during workshop)\n\n\n\nEasy-cut practice blocks\n\n\n\nLinoleum blocks\n\n\n\nBasic inking supplies\n\n\n\nPaper for printing\n\n\n\nRegistration guides\n\n\n\nSafety equipment\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Bring \n\n\n\n\nSketches or reference images for your prints\n\n\n\nApron or work clothes\n\n\n\nNotebook for taking notes\n\n\n\nOptional: any personal carving tools you prefer to use and your own water color\, acrylic\, tempera\, etc. paints for Day 2.  \n\n\n\n\nSpace is limited to ensure individual attention. All skill levels welcome. Participants must be 16 or older due to sharp tool usage. \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge\, stove and microwave if needed). \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\nIf you are in need of a full or partial scholarship to access this event\, please email arts@pnfarm.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nBrian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has shown work in group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. \n\n\n\nHe began working primarily in block printing in the 2010s and is a member of Print Arts Northwest. A PAN Emerging Printmaking Resident in 2023/24\, he is now in his third year as an instructor at Pacific Northwest Farm Arts. His printmaking practice continues to evolve as he experiments with new techniques and materials beyond the block. \n\n\n\nHe is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose\, and works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.

Poets are invited to browse the gallery before the reading if you would like to share work in response to something from the show. This month’s theme is Spring to Life and the opening reception is Saturday\, April 4th from 5-7. \n\n\n\nThere will be light snacks available at the reading\, and the gallery will be open for sales before and after the event. \n\n\n\nIf you have questions and/or would like to read\, please feel free to email us and we’ll get you on the list (or just answer your questions)! SUMMARY:Quick Sketching on the Farm and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:What is Quick Sketching? It’s a chance to let go of perfection and capture the feeling of a place with quick\, expressive sketches. In this fun and welcoming workshop\, local artist and teacher Linda Robertson will lead us in a loose drawing approach that’s all about observation\, memory\, and emotion—not technical accuracy. Linda’s signature 90-second sketch technique is a playful and powerful way to begin drawing quickly\, confidently\, and without overthinking. This practice is a fantastic way to begin drawing without pressure\, no matter your experience level!  Linda will share stories and pages from her own sketchbooks\, created during travels in Ireland\, France\, Hawaii\, and beyond.  Using the scenic backdrop of Plas Newydd Farm\, you’ll see how these quick impressions can become meaningful visual diaries of your own adventures—whether abroad\, in your own backyard\, or here on the farm.  This workshop is open to all levels. You don’t need to “know how to draw.” You just need curiosity\, a sense of play\, and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you. We will be taking a few short walks on the farm\, so come prepared to be out in the November weather!  All supplies for this workshop will be provided for you\, but feel free to bring your favorite sketchbook and watercolor set. Don’t worry if you haven’t tried anything like this before. We’ll just relax and have some fun! Please bring a lunch\, and clothes and shoes to be outside whatever the weather! We will provide coffee\, tea\, water\, and light snacks. While we make every effort to be an accessible space\, there are some limitations due to the realities of our historical space. Please get in touch at arts@pnfarm.com if you have accessibility needs\, and we will do our best to accommodate you! Likewise\, if you are in need of a full or partial scholarship to attend this workshop\, please drop us a line at the above address and we will work with you!  Linda Robertson is a nationally recognized artist\, art instructor\, and author of the Embracing Encaustic book series. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and has taught art workshops for the last 20 years. Linda has been featured speaker and instructor at numerous art conferences throughout the US\, and her work has been published in books and periodicals including American Art Collector\, Authentic Visual Voices\, and Professional Artist Magazine.  Linda has been a featured presenter and instructor at the International Encaustic Artists (IEA) retreat in Ireland\, and leads her own 8-day art retreats in Ireland annually. You can also work with Linda at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island at her 3-day encaustic workshops each summer.  Visit LindaRobertsonArts.com to view more art and join her Studio Stories mailing list to receive invitations to her workshops and special events.

SUMMARY:Plein Air at the Forest Edge
DESCRIPTION:2-day Plein Air workshop on the farm with Jef Gunn. Plein Air painting is simply painting in the open air. That’s what we’ll do. Painting itself can be tricky\, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition\, simplification\, color\, palette layout (and management!) \, gumption\, place\, light and shadow\, mystery. This will be quite the adventure in painting in the out of doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. A farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers\, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color\, composition\, palette management\, and keeping your cool while managing all that! It’s going to be a great weekend out on the land. Jef is an experienced teacher with a wealth of knowledge to offer and we’re so excited to welcome him to the farm for his first Ridgefield workshop. We will provide coffee\, tea\, water and snacks. Participants should bring water bottle\, lunch\, clothes for the weather\, and the materials listed below. If you have any difficulty acquiring materials\, please get in touch and we will see how we can help! As always\, limited scholarships are available. While we work to accommodate participants with mobility support needs\, this workshop is out on the land and may not be accessible to all. For questions about materials\, scholarships and accessibility\, please email arts@pnfarm.com and we will work to meet your needs!Jef Gunn has studied and practiced drawing and painting since the 1970s\, with formative experiences in California\, Barcelona\, Paris and Seattle. He began working in encaustic in 1985\, integrating materials such as paper\, ink\, tar\, fabric\, and gold leaf to explore layered meanings influenced by Asian art. His work has been exhibited nationally\, including solo and group shows at Oregon State University\, Marylhurst University\, and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. In 2006\, he co-curated the national encaustic show Impulse. Jef has taught painting and drawing in Seattle and Portland since the mid-1990s\, and his work is represented by galleries in Seattle\, Edison\, Honolulu\, and Portland. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge\, and helpful insight\, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint.

In this 2-day class you’ll make a basket in the traditional European stake and strand style — a great foundation for your future explorations in basketry. As time allows we’ll add handles and discuss everything from harvesting willow to prepping your materials for weaving. This is a great class for beginners\, or any weavers looking to strengthen their basic stake and strand skills. You’ll come away with your own hand-woven willow basket great for gathering\, storage\, and everyday household use.  Ticket price includes an $80 materials fee for the willow. Expect to spend 7 focused weaving hours per class day\, and to use your hand and upper body strength throughout the class.Your Instructor: Robin Brady is a basket weaver and willow devotee. They tend a cultivated willow patch at their home in Ridgefield\, WA and gather wild willow along nearby waterways. They come to basketry via long time devotion to crafts and lifeways that keep them in the practice of direct and reciprocal relationship to the living world. As a weaver of mixed European descent\, they focus primarily on styles of willow basketry with roots in countries their ancestors once wove in\, while being deeply inspired by the many brilliant weaving traditions belonging to cultures world-wide. Robin first learned basketry from Margaret Matthewson and other weavers in her watershed lineage\, and are honored to continue the tradition of passing along this love of working with willow. *** Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. SUMMARY:Linoleum Block Printing -- With Brian Tibbetts
DESCRIPTION:Linoleum Block Printing: A Two-Day Workshop Experience with Brian Tibbetts The number one wish from the folks who attended Brian’s first workshop back in 2023 was that they had another day to refine their skills\, so that’s what we are offering up for this spring. We hope you’ll join us!Block printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier\, and easy way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition of printmaking\, spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. From the Japanese woodcut moku hanga prints\, depicting the “Floating World” or Ukiyo-e; to the 2000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich history of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance\, printmaking continues to be a way to make art accessible to the masses both in terms of owning the finished product and in terms of making the art itself. In this comprehensive two-day workshop\, designed to suit both beginners and those with some experience\, you’ll dive deep into the art of block printing through hands-on learning and exploration of both single-color and multi-color techniques. Day One: Foundations of Block Printing Introduction to block printing materials and toolsUnderstanding different carving materials and their propertiesBasic image carving techniques using easy-cut materialsAdvanced carving techniques for linoleum blocksPaper preparation and ink selectionPrinting techniques for creating clean\, consistent editionsRegistration methods for precise printingCreating and printing a numbered edition of your first block printDay Two: Multi-Color Techniques and Advanced Methods Introduction to multi-color block printing approachesColor theory and ink mixing for printmakingRegistration systems for multiple colorsReduction printing techniquesMultiple block printing methodsColor overlay effects and transparencyAlternative inking techniques including gradients and selective inkingCreation of a multi-color print using your choice of techniqueThroughout both days\, participants will receive individual guidance and feedback while working at their own pace. More experienced participants will have opportunities to explore advanced techniques and push their creative boundaries. All participants will leave with their own completed editions of both single-color and multi-color prints. Materials Included: Carving tools (for use during workshop)Easy-cut practice blocksLinoleum blocksBasic inking suppliesPaper for printingRegistration guidesSafety equipmentWhat to Bring: Sketches or reference images for your printsApron or work clothesNotebook for taking notesOptional: any personal carving tools you prefer to useLight breakfast\, coffee\, tea and water will be provided. Please bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Participants have access to refrigerator\, microwave and stove\, and a 1 hour lunch break will be built into both days. You will note two separate tickets below\, with different materials costs included in each. Please be sure to choose the appropriate one so we can have your materials ready for you!  If you are a beginner with no tools\, your ticket will include an $85  fee for everything you need for the weekend. If you are coming equipped with your own tools\, the fee is $45 for linoleum blocks\, ink\, and paper. Space is limited to ensure individual attention. All skill levels welcome. Participants must be 16 or older due to sharp tool usage. Your Instructor: Brian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has been a part of group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. He began working primarily in block printing in the 2010s and is a member of Print Arts Northwest\, and was a PAN Emerging Printmaking Resident in 2023/24. He is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose. He works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.  Please note: If you have accessibility needs\, please reach out and we will work to accommodate you. While we strive to make our workshops accessible to all\, we are located in a historical home that does not have accessible restrooms; our lowest entrance has two steps to enter.
