SUMMARY:Flora & Fauna Costume Workshop 2
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the solstice with us at PN Farm Arts Initiative! \n\n\n\nWhat started as a neighborhood celebration is turning into a community-wide event! On June 21st\, we will be hosting a group costumed bike ride in Ridgefield\, followed by a barbecue potluck here on the farm. You can find more info on the event page for the Flora & Fauna Solstice Celebration.  \n\n\n\nIn advance of that celebration\, we are hosting a couple drop-in costume workshops for people who want to join the ride who would like some assistance in creating their costume—or simply want to create it in community rather than at home. The workshops are free of charge\, but  donations to help defray costs will be gladly accepted; we also ask that if you attend\, you really do join us for the celebration on June 21st! \n\n\n\nThe first day of this workshop will focus on construction using cardboard\, paper packing tape\, and paper mache. Participants can come with a clear idea of what they want to make and use the materials provided or consult with the instructors for guidance on possibilities and methods for construction.  \n\n\n\nDay two will focus on painting the finished sculptures and ensuring they can be secured to the bicycle and/or rider.  \n\n\n\nNo art experience is required! Children attending are required to have an adult with them at all times – the workshop is taking place in the Plas Newydd barn\, which is part of a working farmyard. \n\n\n\nWe’ll have snacks and water\, as well as the following supplies on hand:  \n\n\n\nCardboard \n\n\n\nPaper packing tape \n\n\n\nPaint \n\n\n\nPaper mache materials  \n\n\n\nDrawing tools – pencils\, sharpies\, etc \n\n\n\nScissors and craft knives \n\n\n\nWire\, zip ties\, string     \n\n\n\nPlease plan on bringing: \n\n\n\nFood and water as needed for happiness and productivity \n\n\n\nA notion of what flora or fauna you would like to represent with your costume \n\n\n\nAny specialty materials they might like to incorporate  \n\n\n\nBike or bike helmet to work on \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic barn that is not explicitly accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister × \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teachers \n\n\n\nAlan Adams and Michelle Hankins are art teachers at View Ridge Middle School in Ridgefield\, Michelle Swinehart teaches art at Portland State University\, and Meghan Gillespie is a professional illustrator and amateur costumer.

SUMMARY:Encountering Deep Time: A Mini-Retreat with Jeff Howard
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the intersection of cosmology\, ecology\, and spirituality \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll join us for this first-of-its-kind retreat. Portland poet Jeff Howard has become a Soup & Words regular over the past few months\, and he is offering up a day that is unlike anything we have done out here. We’re pretty excited! \n\n\n\nFrom Jeff: \n\n\n\nThe science of the past century provides startling insights into how the Earth and its intricate life systems—including our own minds—have arisen through the physical processes of the universe. \n\n\n\nLearning to dwell in the realization that we have been “knitted from the void” and are profoundly home in one of the Milky Way’s vast spiral arms means learning to see our world\, our lives\, our very consciousness in Deep Time. This six-hour retreat will use science\, poetry\, and guided meditation to explore the path from the Big Bang to the world we know today. We will consider how this perspective can inform our understanding of the mounting ecological crisis\, our major social challenges\, and Plas Newydd Farm itself. \n\n\n\nWe’re hoping to get out on the landscape for this one\, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping! \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge\, stove and microwave if needed). \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but we welcome a donation if you are able. Ticket options below\, or you can donate on the day with cash\, check or card. Thanks for your support! \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nJeff Howard is an interdisciplinary social scientist whose career has focused on environmental policy and technology policy. He’s also a poet and photographer whose work has been published in literary and environmental journals. Prayers of the New Earth\, a collection of framed photos and poems\, has been displayed in Portland\, Snohomish\, and Pittsburgh. As a Buddhist and activist\, his creative and intellectual fascination now focuses on humanity coming to recognize its position in deep time\, that is\, recognize itself—body\, mind\, soul—as a creature of the cosmos\, a creature of ecosystems\, a creature of Earth. He lives in Portland. \n\n\n\nYou can find his work around the web. Here are links to several recent poems: \n\n\n\n\n“Gathering Day” and “Ritual of the curvature\,” Unearthed \n\n\n\n“Come Back\,” The Fourth River\n\n\n\n“Steady State\,” Amethyst Review\n\n\n\n“Portents\,” Consilience

SUMMARY:Canopy Time – May
DESCRIPTION:“If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.”  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree.  \n\nCanopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops! Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow.  \nBring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses.  \nSuggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. We’ll take cash\, check\, Venmo\, or a smile if cost is a barrier!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:A Two-Day Workshop Experience \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to welcome PN Farm Arts favorite Brian Tibbets back to the farm for a two-day workshop! Brian is a generous teacher\, and block printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. \n\n\n\nFrom traditional Japanese woodcut block prints popular the world over; to the 2\,000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich tradition of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance—printmaking continues to make art accessible to the masses\, both in terms of owning finished work and in terms of making it. \n\n\n\nIn this comprehensive two-day workshop\, designed for both beginners and those with some experience\, you’ll dive deep into the art of block printing through hands-on learning and exploration of single-color and multi-color techniques. \n\n\n\nDay One: Foundations of Block Printing \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to block printing materials and tools\n\n\n\nUnderstanding different carving materials and their properties\n\n\n\nBasic image carving techniques using easy-cut materials\n\n\n\nAdvanced carving techniques for linoleum and woodcut blocks\n\n\n\nPaper preparation and ink selection\n\n\n\nPrinting techniques for creating clean\, consistent editions\n\n\n\nRegistration methods for precise printing\n\n\n\nPrinting a test print for designing a numbered edition of a block print\n\n\n\n\nDay Two: Multi-Color Techniques and the Provincetown Print \n\n\n\n\nOverview of multi-color block printing approaches\n\n\n\nColor theory and ink mixing for printmaking\n\n\n\nRegistration systems for multiple colors\n\n\n\nIntroduction to the Provincetown print: history\, concept\, and method\n\n\n\nDeep dive into Provincetown printing technique: working with a single block to produce multi-color prints\n\n\n\nColor overlay effects and transparency\n\n\n\nAlternative inking techniques including gradients and selective inking\n\n\n\nCreation of a Provincetown print edition\n\n\n\n\nThroughout both days\, participants will receive individual guidance and feedback while working at their own pace within the overall class schedule. More experienced participants will have opportunities to explore advanced techniques and push their creative boundaries. All participants will have the opportunity to produce test prints with instructor guidance of both a single-color print and a Provincetown print.  \n\n\n\nMaterials Included  \n\n\n\n\nCarving tools (for use during workshop)\n\n\n\nEasy-cut practice blocks\n\n\n\nLinoleum blocks\n\n\n\nBasic inking supplies\n\n\n\nPaper for printing\n\n\n\nRegistration guides\n\n\n\nSafety equipment\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Bring \n\n\n\n\nSketches or reference images for your prints\n\n\n\nApron or work clothes\n\n\n\nNotebook for taking notes\n\n\n\nOptional: any personal carving tools you prefer to use and your own water color\, acrylic\, tempera\, etc. paints for Day 2.  \n\n\n\n\nSpace is limited to ensure individual attention. All skill levels welcome. Participants must be 16 or older due to sharp tool usage. \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge\, stove and microwave if needed). \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\nIf you are in need of a full or partial scholarship to access this event\, please email arts@pnfarm.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nBrian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has shown work in group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. \n\n\n\nHe began working primarily in block printing in the 2010s and is a member of Print Arts Northwest. A PAN Emerging Printmaking Resident in 2023/24\, he is now in his third year as an instructor at Pacific Northwest Farm Arts. His printmaking practice continues to evolve as he experiments with new techniques and materials beyond the block. \n\n\n\nHe is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose\, and works as a nonprofit consultant\, grants researcher\, and grant writer.

SUMMARY:April Poetry Reading in Ridgefield!
DESCRIPTION:April is Poetry Month! \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to partner with the Ridgefield Art Gallery to host a monthly celebration of art and poetry. We hope you’ll join us at the next one on Sunday\, April 19th from 2-4 pm\, whether as a reader or an audience member! \n\n\n\nWe meet at the Ridgefield Art Gallery in downtown Ridgefield on the third Sunday of each month for an afternoon of poetry and light refreshments. Bring something to read or just come to listen and enjoy the community. It’s an incredibly welcoming crowd for new and experienced readers alike\, and PN Farm Arts writers are well-represented in the line-up and in the audience. You are invited to share new or old work\, related to the monthly theme or just work that needs to be heard. \n\n\n\nThe gallery mounts a new show each month. This month’s featured artist is Molly Barnes\, and I promise you don’t want to miss her gift for color and form! Poets are invited to browse the gallery before the reading if you would like to share work in response to something from the show. This month’s theme is Spring to Life and the opening reception is Saturday\, April 4th from 5-7. \n\n\n\nThere will be light snacks available at the reading\, and the gallery will be open for sales before and after the event. \n\n\n\nIf you have questions and/or would like to read\, please feel free to email us and we’ll get you on the list (or just answer your questions)! No RSVP needed\, but space is limited\, so be sure to arrive on time for best choice of seats! \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This event takes place in the Ridgefield Art Gallery at the corner of Main and Pioneer. SUMMARY:Soup and Words – Drop-in Writing Time!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit and write together! \nThere is little I love more than sitting in a warm room with brilliant minds\, putting words on the page and sharing snippets of what we create. So I’m making the space for this in my life this year\, and I’d love to have you join me!  \nThere will be soup. There will be writing prompts. There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!)  \nParticipation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!  \nAccessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop!

(And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!)  \n\n\n\nParticipation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!

SUMMARY:Canopy Time -- January
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree. Canopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. Suggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. We’ll take cash\, check\, Venmo or a smile\, if cost is a barrier!

SUMMARY:Quick Sketching on the Farm and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:What is Quick Sketching? It’s a chance to let go of perfection and capture the feeling of a place with quick\, expressive sketches. In this fun and welcoming workshop\, local artist and teacher Linda Robertson will lead us in a loose drawing approach that’s all about observation\, memory\, and emotion—not technical accuracy. Linda’s signature 90-second sketch technique is a playful and powerful way to begin drawing quickly\, confidently\, and without overthinking. This practice is a fantastic way to begin drawing without pressure\, no matter your experience level!  Linda will share stories and pages from her own sketchbooks\, created during travels in Ireland\, France\, Hawaii\, and beyond.  Using the scenic backdrop of Plas Newydd Farm\, you’ll see how these quick impressions can become meaningful visual diaries of your own adventures—whether abroad\, in your own backyard\, or here on the farm.  This workshop is open to all levels. You don’t need to “know how to draw.” You just need curiosity\, a sense of play\, and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you. We will be taking a few short walks on the farm\, so come prepared to be out in the November weather!  All supplies for this workshop will be provided for you\, but feel free to bring your favorite sketchbook and watercolor set. Don’t worry if you haven’t tried anything like this before. We’ll just relax and have some fun! Please bring a lunch\, and clothes and shoes to be outside whatever the weather! We will provide coffee\, tea\, water\, and light snacks. While we make every effort to be an accessible space\, there are some limitations due to the realities of our historical space. Please get in touch at arts@pnfarm.com if you have accessibility needs\, and we will do our best to accommodate you! Likewise\, if you are in need of a full or partial scholarship to attend this workshop\, please drop us a line at the above address and we will work with you!  Linda Robertson is a nationally recognized artist\, art instructor\, and author of the Embracing Encaustic book series. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and has taught art workshops for the last 20 years. Linda has been featured speaker and instructor at numerous art conferences throughout the US\, and her work has been published in books and periodicals including American Art Collector\, Authentic Visual Voices\, and Professional Artist Magazine.  Linda has been a featured presenter and instructor at the International Encaustic Artists (IEA) retreat in Ireland\, and leads her own 8-day art retreats in Ireland annually. You can also work with Linda at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island at her 3-day encaustic workshops each summer.  Visit LindaRobertsonArts.com to view more art and join her Studio Stories mailing list to receive invitations to her workshops and special events.

SUMMARY:BirdFest & Bluegrass Nature Journaling Walk
DESCRIPTION:BirdFest & Bluegrass Partnership Event! In this partnership between The Ridgefield Art Association and The Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge\, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided walk of the refuge with paintbrush in hand!Join local artist Kathleen Sorman to learn new ways to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the RNWR through nature journaling. We’ll begin our time together with a short walk on the Oaks to Wetland Trail. We’ll make new discoveries along the way and see how we can use these in our journals to record our findings. Then we’ll return to the Refuge Headquarters building and use our journals to learn to paint a bird with watercolors. Great class for kids 10 years or above and all adults. From Kathleen: I have always been a nature lover—camping\, hiking\, biking and sailing. I moved to the beautiful PNW fifteen years ago and call this home. I love the natural beauty we are able to see each and every day. I have been journaling for 8-10 years and enjoy getting out and focusing on different things each session—birds\, trees\, plants and flowers. My art journey began about 7 years ago with watercolor and botanical art. Currently\, I’m exploring acrylics and abstract art. The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is one of my favorite places to escape to—something new each visit! You will receive: A handout on nature journaling\, a watercolor journal\, a watercolor brush pen\, and the paints necessary for your first journal entry. Class is free\, but has limited space. Please register here by Friday\, October 3rd to attend. Note: There is very limited space for same-day registration on site on a first come\, first served basis. We STRONGLY recommend you secure your spot here ahead of time\, but if you’re seeing this after registration is full or closed\, please arrive at the refuge before 10 am on October 4th\, and we will let you know if there is room! Where: Ridgefield NWR Headquarters: 28908 NW Main AVE\, Ridgefield\, WA 98642 Date: Saturday\, October 4\, 2025 Time: 10:00 am Cost: FREE!
