SUMMARY:Weave with Willow: Market Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Weave a willow market basket with Ridgefield artist Robin Brady  \n\n\n\nIn this 2-day class you’ll make a round\, handled basket in the traditional European stake and strand style — a great foundation for your future explorations in basketry.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll weave with a combination of cultivated and wild willows grown right here in Ridgefield and throughout the region. We’ll spend two full days weaving our baskets\, and as time allows we’ll discuss everything from harvesting willow to prepping your materials for weaving. This is a great class for beginners\, or any weavers looking to strengthen their basic stake and strand skills. You’ll come away with your own hand-woven willow basket great for going to market\, gathering\, storage\, and everyday household use. \n\n\n\nNote – Weaving with willow is hard work! Expect to spend 7 focused weaving hours per class day\, and to use your hand and upper body strength throughout the class. \n\n\n\nTicket price includes an $80 materials fee for the willow.  \n\n\n\nParticipants should provide: \n\n\n\n\nA fixed blade or locking knife\n\n\n\n\n\nYour favorite sharp pruners if you have them (or you may use the instructor provided ones)\n\n\n\n\n\nAny additional seating cushion\, back support\, or special chair you need to be comfortable\n\n\n\n\n\nLayers for sun/weather if you wish to work or have lunch outside\n\n\n\n\n\nLunch and a water bottle \n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. Please email arts@pnfarm.com for more info. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nRobin Brady (she/they) is a queer craftsperson\, basket weaver and willow devotee.  \n\n\n\nThey tend a cultivated willow patch at their home and gather wild willow along nearby waterways. They live on Chinook & Cowlitz land in Ridgefield\, Washington\, under passing sandhill crane migration. They come to basketry via long time devotion to crafts and skill sets that keep them a student in the practice of direct and reciprocal relationship to the living world.  \n\n\n\nAs a weaver of mixed European settler descent\, they focus primarily on styles of willow basketry with roots in countries their ancestors once wove in\, while being in awe of the many brilliant weaving traditions belonging to cultures near and far. SUMMARY:Expressive Color in Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:With Scott Gellatly \n\n\n\nThis two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts to capture the light\, atmosphere and emotion of the landscape. Participants will paint at diverse locations around Plas Newydd Farm while considering the formal aspects of painting – shape\, color\, and edge. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and exercises. This workshop is intended for painters working in oil or acrylic. Scott will be working with oils.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will be responsible for bringing the materials and equipment needed for this workshop. A materials list will be shared upon registration.  \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided throughout the weekend. Participants should plan on bringing a water bottle\, lunch both days\, and any specific snacks to get through the weekend. SUMMARY:Encountering Deep Time: A Mini-Retreat with Jeff Howard -- RESCHEDULED!
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the intersection of cosmology\, ecology\, and spirituality \n\n\n\nWe are excited to have a new date for this retreat\, and there are a few open spots. Portland poet Jeff Howard has become a Soup & Words regular over the past few months\, and he is offering up a day that is unlike anything we have done out here. We’re pretty excited! \n\n\n\nFrom Jeff:  \n\n\n\nThe science of the past century provides startling insights into how the Earth and its intricate life systems—including our own minds—have arisen through the physical processes of the universe.  \n\n\n\nLearning to dwell in the realization that we have been “knitted from the void” and are profoundly home in one of the Milky Way’s vast spiral arms means learning to see our world\, our lives\, our very consciousness in Deep Time. This six-hour retreat will use science\, poetry\, and guided meditation to explore the path from the Big Bang to the world we know today. We will consider how this perspective can inform our understanding of the mounting ecological crisis\, our major social challenges\, and Plas Newydd Farm itself. \n\n\n\nWe’re hoping to get out on the landscape for this one\, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping!  \n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea\, water and light snacks will be provided. As a Buddhist and activist\, his creative and intellectual fascination now focuses on humanity coming to recognize its position in deep time\, that is\, recognize itself—body\, mind\, soul—as a creature of the cosmos\, a creature of ecosystems\, a creature of Earth. These elusive delights\, these constants\, bring meaning and some measure of reassurance to our lives. We’ll write about what birds bring to a moment\, our memory\, our lives. DESCRIPTION:Plas Newydd Farm Excursion \n\n\n\nCanopy Time excursions are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!  \n\n\n\nPart nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow.  \n\n\n\nBring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses.  \n\n\n\n“If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.” – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree \n\n\n\nAccessibility Note: This event takes place out on the land. SUMMARY:Autumn Stitching on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:With Nicki Eybel \n\n\n\nBack by popular demand! Last winter’s stitching event was a delight\, and we’re so thrilled to welcome Nicki Eybel back to the farm for some autumn stitching! Gathered around the workshop table\, participants will stitch an 8”x8” landscape with an autumn palette.  Think sky\, river and land (just like PN Farm!)  We will spend the morning creating our backgrounds and practicing some stitches (new and/or familiar).  In the afternoon we will add details to our background (sky…rain? Clouds? Sun?)  River and land (trees\, leaves etc)  Your piece of art will be yours…abstract? She has exhibited in local galleries and group shows. She earned her Stitching Badge as a Girl Scout long\, long ago.

We provide the soup and writing prompts. SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting with Jef Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Land\, Water and Sky! Plein Air Painting in the Shoulder Season \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to welcome Portland artist Jef Gunn back for his second PN Farm Arts workshop. Jef brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his teaching\, and delights in the complexities of a working landscape. We’re trying something new with a late fall plein air workshop\, and we promise warming stations and lots of hot coffee–not the mention the possibility of painting in the embrace of a historic barn! \n\n\n\nPlein Air painting is simply painting in the “open air.” That’s what we’ll do.  \n\n\n\nPainting itself can be tricky\, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition\, simplification\, color\, palette\, gumption\, place\, light and shadow\, mystery. \n\n\n\nThis will be quite the adventure in painting the out-of-doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. The farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers\, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color\, composition\, palette management\, and keeping your cool while managing all that!  \n\n\n\nIf the weather changes\, we’ll have studio exercises that deepen the work done outside. For instance\, composition\, abstract structure and color interactions. Beyond these\, we could address the possibility of emotion in the painting. \n\n\n\nA $20 materials fee is included in the cost of your ticket\, and we will reach out with more instructions as the event gets closer! We will work to accommodate access however we can\, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our teacher \n\n\n\nJef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawai’i. He studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s\, continued to paint like heck in Seattle in the 1980s\, and held residencies in Barcelona (1986-7) and Paris (1988). Since the mid 1990s he has engaged in a passionate study of Asian art. He lives and works in Portland\, Oregon\, showing oils\, encaustics\, mixed media and prints at Augen Gallery (Portland)\, Traver Gallery (Seattle)\, i.e. gallery (Edison) and Cedar St. Gallery\, (Honolulu). While he’s explored several approaches to abstraction\, he has always also maintained a practice of painting the landscape in the open air.  \n\n\n\nWith a balance of humor\, broad knowledge\, and helpful insight\, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint\, while bringing to bear practical instruction through historical examples\, especially of the Modern period.

DESCRIPTION:With Gina DeNoble \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlaces can be so inspiring! They engage the senses\, hold memories both good and challenging\, and allow us to orient ourselves within physical space. In this workshop\, we will observe our surroundings\, engage with the land\, and consider how place affects us. The mood of her music could be described as dramatic\, whimsical\, emotional\, and romantic.  \n\n\n\nHaving grown up a stone’s throw from Mount Rainier National Park\, Gina is a dyed-in-the-wool Pacific Northwesterner! Her debut full-length album entitled Wanderer’s Paradise is currently streaming on all major platforms. The songs on the album are heavily place-based\, and were written while she was traveling regularly between Washington\, Canada\, and Alaska.
