SUMMARY:Inspired By Place: Open Air Monotypes on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:NEW TIME and PRICE! — Now just 2 days! With Nanette Wallace and Lisa Ellis. In this two-day workshop we will create monotypes outdoors\, inspired by our surroundings at the beautiful Plas Newydd farm. This large family farm located alongside the Lewis River has a diverse landscape\, with rolling fields\, mature forests\, old barns\, wild flowers and plenty of watery goodness to draw inspiration from\, and a lovely farmhouse for us to take refuge in. Inspiration can take many forms when working in and around nature\, and any direction that inspires you will be supported in this workshop\, representational or non-representation. We will create one of a kind prints on paper\, monotypes\, with an emphasis on light\, value\, impulse\, experimentation and joy! We will apply and remove ink onto printing surfaces\, (aka plates) with brayers\, cotton cloths\, brushes\, and other tools to make original singular images printed on paper. This workshop will include a combination of instruction\, demonstration and individual work time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered. The workshop is open to all levels\, 18+; no prior experience is necessary. Workshop materials will be included with the exception of paper. Each participant will begin with some paper to experiment with\, and additional paper will be sold on a per-sheet basis. Each sheet is large enough to print 2 to 12 monotypes\, depending upon the size of your plate. Sheets of high quality printmaking paper cost up to $7.50 each\, plan to budget $15 (or more) for additional paper. We will provide an optional material list prior to the workshop; recommended papers will be listed on the materials list if you prefer to bring your own.The workshop will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day (Saturday & Sunday). Light snacks\, coffee\, tea and water will be available free of charge. Participants should plan to bring lunch for each day\, comfortable shoes for walking and standing\, and layers of clothing for working outside in the fickle spring weather.  A $50 materials fee is included in the cost of the ticket for basic materials. See above for more detail on additional materials. Scholarships are available if cost is a barrier! Please email arts@pnfarm.com to inquire. We received a generous gift to seed our scholarship fund\, and don’t want to turn anyone away if we can help it!*** Please note — Ridgefield is about 45 minutes from most parts of Portland\, and an easy\, pleasant drive against most of the traffic of morning and evening commutes. If you’d like to stay in the area for the weekend\, please reach out to Abby at abbyb@pnfarm.com for advice about local accommodations.

SUMMARY:Canopy Time -- May
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree. Canopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops! Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. Suggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. We’ll take cash\, check\, Venmo or a smile\, if cost is a barrier!

SUMMARY:Soup and Words – Drop-in Writing Time!
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit and write together! There is little I love more than sitting in a warm room with brilliant minds\, putting words on the page and sharing snippets of what we create. So I’m making the space for this in my life this year\, and I’d love to have you join me! There will be soup. There will be writing prompts. There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!) Participation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!

SUMMARY:Random Weave Baskets with Julie Johnson
DESCRIPTION:New date!!It’s basket weaving time! In this class we’ll explore the basics of random weave by creating a melon-sized basket. Working with willows and red osier dogwood harvested from Plas Newydd Farm earlier in the year\, we’ll create baskets that are a true collaboration with the farm’s gorgeous wetland landscapes. All skill levels are welcome! Please bring a lunch\, clothes and shoes to be outside if weather allows a lunch time walk\, and your favorite pruning or kitchen shears. Julie Johnson has been weaving baskets for over 25 years and works primarily with plant materials that she and her husband gather during their explorations of Pacific Northwest landscapes. While also practicing many more traditional forms of weaving\, sculptural random weave baskets have become some of the most artistically-freeing forms of woven expression for her. For more of Julie’s work see: Columbia Basin Basketry Guild: https://www.basketryguild.org/julie-johnsonInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/florafiberdye/

SUMMARY:Farm Arts Open House\, Take Two
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day on the farm celebrating the arts\, and some of Ridgefield and Clark County’s most creative souls. All ages are welcome! There will be mini-workshops\, tasty food\, an art showcase\, and maybe even a farm tour. It’s not to be missed! Come learn about what’s in store for our second year\, and learn how you can be a part of things! We hope to see you! (The thing about beginnings is that it’s hard to say exactly when a thing gets started! December was the anniversary of the first paid arts workshop on Plas Newydd Farm. January is the anniversary of our giant planning meeting back in 2020\, before the world shifted under our feet pandemic-style. But March? March of 2023 saw the first two workshops under the official banner of the PN Farm Arts Initiative\, with Roxanne Bash and Christopher Luna paving the way for all the good that came after. Plus\, it’s Abby’s birthday month! So plenty to celebrate here\, with our second attempt at an Open House!)Here’s a tentative schedule. The blocks may move around\, and there may be additional offerings\, but here’s what it’s looking like at the moment!10 am: Book Arts with Jody & Alan Adams 11 am: Poetry Workshop with Christopher Luna 12 pm: Dried Flower Cards with Barbara AW Wright 1 pm: Weaving with Elliot Gajan 3 pm: Origami with Phuong Tran\, Megan Dudley\, and Bonnie Donovan

SUMMARY:Writing Your Tree Story\, with Kate Gray
DESCRIPTION:Come talk with the trees of Plas Newydd Farm\, and bring your tree stories with you for a one-day generative workshop with Oregon-based poet Kate Gray. Maybe you climbed trees as a kid. Maybe you picnicked under trees in parks. Maybe you made your living planting seedlings\, tending them\, and then shipping your crop to the sawmill. Maybe you’re a woodworker wanting to dig deep into the stories your lumber carries. Whether you are a tree-lover or just a human who lives in a wooden house\, touches paper\, or\, for that matter\, breathes\, trees are a part of your story. What tree(s) shaped you? In this generative workshop\, you’ll write the story of a tree in your life\, whether it shielded you\, grew you\, or gob-smacked you with its beauty. No tree springing to mind? We’ll make sure you have the chance to meet some of the trees of Plas Newydd Farm to spur your writing. No experience necessary. Poetry/prose/song encouraged. You’ll experience a guided meditation\, writing to prompts\, a walk in the forested landscape of Plas Newydd (weather-permitting)\, laughter\, and the Gateless Method of specific\, positive feedback. Kate Gray’s passion stems from writing\, teaching\, and volunteering. For Every Girl: New & Selected Poems was published by Widow & Orphan House in 2019. Her first full-length book of poems\, Another Sunset We Survive (Cedar House Books\, 2007) was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and followed chapbooks\, Bone-Knowing (2006)\, winner of the Gertrude Press Poetry Prize and Where She Goes (2000)\, winner of the Blue Light Chapbook Prize. Kate’s first novel\, Carry the Sky\, (Forest Avenue\, 2014) stares at bullying without blinking. In her novel-in-progress\, she narrates\, in Sylvia Plath’s voice\, what led to The Bell Jar and her suicide attempt in 1953. SUMMARY:Craft your own pen! – Wood Turning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 3rd for a wood-turning workshop and craft your own ball point pen from wood grown right here on the farm!Guided by sculptor Lila Ferber\, participants will  leave this class with a functioning ballpoint twist pen and simple instructions on how to change the ink. Never turned on the lathe before\, or interested in learning a new wood-turning skill?  This class is for you!  We’ll learn about fingernail gouges and carbide tools\, and how to go from raw wood to a finished product\, going through the steps of cutting\, drilling\, gluing and turning our chosen wood\, using lathes from Lila’s mobile wood-turning studio. Each participant will make their own unique pen shape\, then sand and finish it with walnut oil and beeswax.  At the end\, you will choose from gold\, silver\, and copper hardware\, to finish your custom-made writing implement\, ready for your own words\, or a perfect gift! How cool is that?? No experience or equipment needed. Bring lunch\, closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty\, and a readiness to learn a new skill! Class size is limited to just 4 participants\, so don’t wait to sign up! Lila Ferber is a sculptor with 9 years of experience in the field\, including turning on the lathe and carving wood\, ice\, stone\, sand\, and foam.  She received her BFA in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri\, and has spent years working at sculpture parks and museums around the US.  Studying under legendary KC woodturner Jon Wilson has inspired her to continue honing her craft and to share it with any and all eager students.  She encourages her class to channel their inner child by being creative and experimenting\, all while gaining new skills\, and friendships along the way.  Follow up questions are always welcome and free of charge as students continue turning on their own at home.

There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!)Participation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!

SUMMARY:Sun Transformations: Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:RAIN DELAY — THIS WORKSHOP IS CANCELLED AND WILL BE OFFERED AGAIN NEXT SUN SEASON! Join us for this all-day workshop exploring the captivating process of cyanotypes! We will use our imaginations\, chance\, and the magic of the sun to create stunning blue and white works of art. Cyanotype is an alternative photo process which uses chemicals and sunlight to create wonderfully mysterious pictures when rinsed in water! Also known as “sun prints”\, this accessible medium involves placing objects and materials onto treated paper\, becoming blue wherever the sun’s rays have reached it. This process is filled with surprises\, so bring your curiosity\, trust and openness with you to this workshop!Facilitator Rachel Mulder (she/her) is an artist and printmaker who indulges in experientiality. She will share this much-beloved practice with you in a hands-on\, exploratory way. We will begin with a wandering tour of the farm where we can gather plant materials and inspiration. Then Rachel will provide a brief demo and share some examples of her work. Each participant will get to create several smaller cyanotypes for the first half of this workshop using high quality hand-coated watercolor paper. After lunch\, we will discuss our experiments from the first half\, Rachel will offer additional techniques to explore\, and participants can create more works. Larger sheets of treated paper will be offered\, including a large scale collaborative piece for us to indulge in!We will utilize plant friends and other natural objects found on the farm\, as well as fabrics\, and an assortment of random objects. Feel empowered to bring your own special treasures\, as long as you don’t mind them baking in the sun for a bit.Ticket price includes $25 materials fee. Snack offerings of coffee\, tea and baked goods\, with gluten and dairy free options and fruit will be available throughout the day.  Please Bring:  Sack lunchWater bottleSturdy shoes for walking (electric cart or car available for the tour if needed for accessibility)Any treasures you want to use in your cyanotypesAccess notes: Masks strongly encouraged while indoors\, and Rachel will be wearing hers at all times. The main workspace where we begin our works of art will be indoors\, and we will venture out into the sun to expose and rinse our cyanotypes. Please dress appropriately for hot weather\, sun\, and clothing that will not mind potential water splashes. The space is NOT fully wheel-chair accessible. Please contact Abby at arts@pnfarm.com with accessibility questions as we will endeavor to accommodate you. **We aim to make this an accessible workshop\, so please get in touch at arts@pnfarm.com if the cost is a burden! Rachel Mulder lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with her two cats\, Opal and Tomasina. She was born in rural Wisconsin and when she was small she spent a lot of time sitting in the grass staring\, obsessing about animals\, watching cartoons and peeling her skin off. A process-oriented artist\, her work vacillates back and forth between meticulous obsession and playful experimentation. She makes drawings using a variety of media that often yield printmakerly textures – residual effects from earning her BFA in Printmaking at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2007.

SUMMARY:Color in Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:*** This workshop is sold out. Email arts@pnfarm.com to be added to the waiting list. ***This two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts to capture the light\, atmosphere and emotion of the landscape. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd Farm property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and exercises. Please note this is a two-day workshop\, running from 8am-6pm both days. Please contact Abby at arts@pnfarm.com if you would like to be steered to nearby accommodations. Students should bring plein air gear\, water\, and a sack lunch. We will provide light snacks throughout the day.  Scott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was most-recently featured in the February/March issue of Plein Air Magazine. www.scottgellatly.com MATERIALS LISTThis workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. Color Palette:Titanium White (150ml or 3 @ 37ml)Cadmium Yellow LightIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)Cadmium OrangeQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)Ultramarine BlueCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)Painting Panels:Ampersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. 1 @ 12” x 16 Panel taped out into a 2 x 2 grid with masking tape. 3 – 4 @ larger panels in sizes between 9” x 12” to 12” x 16”. Wet-panel Carrier:These are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. For example\, their 10” x 12” carrier will accommodate panels that share the 12” dimension (including 9” x 12”\, and 6” x 12”). In lieu of a pre-made wet panel carrier\, a couple clean pizza boxes will work just fine. Easel:The main consideration with a plein air easel is that it is lightweight\, but large enough to support the size of paintings we’ll be doing in class. I recommend the UGO Pochade Boxes. They come in three different sizes – the middle and largest sizes will work well for the size of panels listed above. Unless your outdoor easel is equipped with legs\, you will need a tripod. SUMMARY:Canopy Time Art Walk/Roll/Ride
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  — Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone TreeJoin us for the first of a series of monthly (ish) drop-in walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures will give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and will provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!Part nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these informal explorations will be a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow. June is a beautiful time here\, before the heat of the summer sets in\, and hopefully before the mosquitoes hatch. Bring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses. And maybe a bottle of water!Asking for a suggested payment of $10-$20\, which we will collect on the day of the event. SUMMARY:Intro to Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:(Price includes a $50 equipment fee)\n\n\n\n\nBlock printing is a relatively low-cost\, low-barrier\, and easy way to begin making art that is part of a rich tradition of printmaking\, spanning multiple cultures throughout the world. From the Japanese woodcut moku hanga prints\, depicting the “Floating World” or Ukiyo-e; to the 2000-year history of block printing on fabric in India; to the rich history of etching\, wood engraving\, and other printmaking techniques employed in Europe since the Renaissance\, printmaking continues to be a way to make art accessible to the masses both in terms of owning the finished product and in terms of making the art itself. \n\nIn this one-day workshop\, you will learn about block printing materials and tools\, how to carve a basic image using easy-cut materials\, how to carve a more detailed image into a linoleum block\, and how to prepare paper and ink to print a numbered edition of a complete work of art. \n\n\n\nStudents will leave the class with a finished print of their own making\, a carved easy cut and a carved lino block for producing numbered editions at home\, and all of the equipment necessary to continue on the adventure of block printmaking on their own.     \n\n\n\nEquipment fee pays for easy cut block\, linoleum block\, Speedball linoleum cutter with interchangeable tips\, bench hook/inking plate\, and brayer.  \n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea and light snacks will be provided. Participants should bring a bag lunch and comfortable walking shoes!\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Your Instructor:  Brian first began making visual art in his late teens\, painting with oils on old vinyl roll-up window blinds found in the closet of his double-studio apartment. He took a handful of painting and mixed-media classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland Community College\, but is primarily self-taught. He has been a part of group exhibitions\, juried shows\, and solo exhibitions at galleries\, coffee shops\, and bars around Portland since the late 1980s. He began working exclusively in block printing in the late 2000s. He is also a professional musician and the author of four books of poetry and prose. SUMMARY:The Poetics of Place
DESCRIPTION:Join Christopher Luna for a day of poetry on Plas Newydd Farm. Christopher will lead a group of eight to ten writers in a day of mindful exploration of place and poetics. SUMMARY:Pysansky—The Art of Ukrainian Easter Egg Dying
DESCRIPTION:**Please note change of date! This workshop has moved to Saturday\, March 18th!** Ever wonder how those beautiful Ukrainian Eggs\, called Pysanky\, are made? Come find out in an afternoon over tea and musing with friends (old and new) how this batiking style of egg dyeing is done. All supplies provided\, and yours to take home. Ukrainians have carried this traditional egg decorating form\, and exchanging with loved ones\, from Pagan times to modern day with geometric symbols designed to deliver well wishes to the receiver.\n\n\n\n\nRoxanne Bash has been making Pysanky since the age of 17. Although she is not Ukrainian\, she learned this traditional artform from a friend whose family immigrated from the Ukraine many years ago. The family impressed on her that they were sharing this tradition with others in the hopes of keeping it alive. This class is Roxanne’s way of helping accomplish that goal.\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop fee covers the cost of supplies\, and in lieu of collecting a fee for her time\, Roxanne invites participants to make a donation to support Ukrainian war relief and refugee efforts. Feel free to make a donation to the organization of your choice\, or bring a cash donation to the event and we will make a plan for a group donation.\n\n\n\n\nCoffee\, tea and light snacks will be provided.
