Calling all young stitchers and crafters — October is Portland Textile Month, and we are so excited to welcome Portland-based textile artist Nicki Eybel for our first ever youth-focused workshop! 

In the morning we will learn and practice a few basic stitches by stitching a sampler. The afternoon will be spent finding a stick and stitching our version. Each will be unique. There are no wrong stitches! Maybe we will each stitch a stick and put them together into a “tree.” Or maybe you will branch (pun) out and stitch an entire tree. Maybe the tree/stick will be inspired by the trees/sticks at the farm or one from your imagination. 

Everyone will leave (pun!) with a sampler and a stitched stick (at least). All materials will be provided. No experience needed. This workshop is targeted at folks aged 12-18, but younger stitchers with some experience will be considered on a case by case basis. Scholarships are available if cost is a barrier. There will be an optional farm walk and/or cozy spaces for adults to hang out and read or write while young artists are creating.

All supplies will be provided. There is a $5.00 materials fee included in the price of your ticket. Please bring a lunch, water bottle, and shoes and clothes that will keep you comfortable outside whatever the weather! 

Nicki Eybel is a newly retired early childhood educator. She is now a mixed media collage artist, lately focusing on abstract stitching. As a member of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild, she is active in the Handstitching Group and has enjoyed a daily stitching practice for the last 2 years. She has exhibited in local locations. She earned her Stitching Badge as a Girl Scout long, long ago.
