Land, Water and Sky! Plein Air Painting in the Shoulder Season
We’re excited to welcome Portland artist Jef Gunn back for his second PN Farm Arts workshop. Jef brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his teaching, and delights in the complexities of a working landscape. We’re trying something new with a late fall plein air workshop, and we promise warming stations and lots of hot coffee–not the mention the possibility of painting in the embrace of a historic barn!
Plein Air painting is simply painting in the “open air.” That’s what we’ll do.
Painting itself can be tricky, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition, simplification, color, palette, gumption, place, light and shadow, mystery.
This will be quite the adventure in painting the out-of-doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. The farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color, composition, palette management, and keeping your cool while managing all that!
If the weather changes, we’ll have studio exercises that deepen the work done outside. For instance, composition, abstract structure and color interactions. Beyond these, we could address the possibility of emotion in the painting.

Accessibility Note: This workshop takes place on the landscape and in the buildings of an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop!
About our teacher
Jef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawai’i. He studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s, continued to paint like heck in Seattle in the 1980s, and held residencies in Barcelona (1986-7) and Paris (1988). Since the mid 1990s he has engaged in a passionate study of Asian art. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon, showing oils, encaustics, mixed media and prints at Augen Gallery (Portland), Traver Gallery (Seattle), i.e. gallery (Edison) and Cedar St. Gallery, (Honolulu). While he’s explored several approaches to abstraction, he has always also maintained a practice of painting the landscape in the open air.
With a balance of humor, broad knowledge, and helpful insight, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint, while bringing to bear practical instruction through historical examples, especially of the Modern period.
